I don't think it would be a problem. Because it is part of the original build, there should be a 4x6 at the top. Just look carefully for joints in the beam. I would not place an opening under one. Of course there is no way to really attach a post in a current code compliant way. The original posts ...

Cliff May home - adding more windows

Hi all, We just fnished an addition on our CM house. We added sq footage to the living room by adding on to the garage towards the street. We want to add additional four-paned windows to the wall where the new living area is. You can see in the picture below, that the new addition is where the white...

No experience with malm, but lots with lazy/nonproductive shops.

If you really want it, why not order it yourself and find someone to install it? There is minimal engineering required since it is not a masonary fireplace shooting out of your roof. Just my thoughts.

Cliff May: Uneven gables and glass

We just completed an extension to our L-shaped CM and were about to install glass in the gables above the garage. We realize that there is a difference of 1 1/2 inches in the length of the gables. To put it in perspective, one side is 1 1/2 longer on the wide side, the side towards the center where ...

if you are talking about the shower pan in our houses, You just scrub them regularly. I'm afraid that in order to make it look really good would also make it slippery. You can Google terrazzo cleaning, but any neutral cleaner is fine. You can also make a paste of baking soda and peroxide, spread th...

1950s silvertone Radio Phonograph

All, Picked up this little gem a few years ago for $20 and it was stored at my parents house. I picked it up, cleaned it up, and found some replacement knobs on ebay (didn't have knobs when I got it). Looks great now if I can only get it to work! Just wondering if anyone knows of a place in So CA to...

OK, if the architect and engineer signed off, then the lateral thing isn't an issue with your place. also, this isn't typical Cliff May construction. this appears to be the Ross Cortese variation as May could keep up with demand. did your architect give you a drawing for finishing the fireplace? No...

You gain lateral bracing. In all houses the walls need to be tied together side to side. The weight of the roof wants to push the walls out. While our houses have a large center beam and posts that help with that, the low pitch of the roof also makes those forces greater. The side to side 4 X 4 is ...

So who's idea was it to just demo everything? Did your "contractor" leave a crew without supervision? Here's how to really do this: you remove all the drywall and assess. That would have told you that you cannot have that wall wide open. I would put the cross tie back and build enough wal...

Advice/thoughts on Cliff May issue

All, we are adding living space onto our Cliff May and have run into an issue. We removed one of the walls where the fireplace is. Once we removed the wall we discovered that two ridge beams meet at that point. We and the engieer did not know this was the case going into the project and the plans si...

Cleaning acrylic spaghetti lamp

We have an old clear spaghetti lamp that has collected dust and dirt over the years. It is kind of sticky too. Nasty! Anyway I am trying to figure out how to clean this thing. I read that you should not use abrasives, anything with ammonia, window and kitchen cleaners, etc. Plus, it is difficult to ...

Joe is your BC source Delta Glass? I know they sell factrolite as I was looking for a supplier last year, but I'm not sure if they have the size you need. I think it came in 3mm and 5mm but I could be wrong. Your source would be useful to know for future reference. The source is Garibaldi Glass in ...

Any ideas for a better setup would be appreciated! Bluetooth headphones. LOL! I have some nice Grados RS1's with a micro amp-all the personal listening I need. Home audio challenge with no attic/walls!

I have been trying to figre out the best way to install a home audio system that can be heard throughout the house, or at least in the living room/kitchen area to start with. Since my house has no attic and close to no wall space this has proven to be a challenge. I ran some wiring from a small clos...
