My House on "What You Get For The Money" 12/19/09

Hey all, If you read the home improvement forum you may remember me and my house. About 4 1/2 years ago I came and asked for advice on restoring a MCM house, and posted the progress. A couple years later HGTV came and filmed the house for "What You Get For The Money". HGTV are finally airi...

Thanks for noticing we were in Atomic Ranch! We couldn't have done what we did without the encouragement we received here on this message board. By the way, some people may not remember the other thread I first posted. http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3215 These are the real before pict...

Wanted - vintage mosaic tile or suggestions on where to look

Hi all, Some of you may remember my mosaic tile wall artwork on the back of my house. A couple of sections of the tile had fallen out over the years and I've been working on repairing it with some tiles a friend gave me, but I'm about to run out and still need more tile to finish the project. Please...

Please keep us informed of your progress on this!

Please take pictures and send along your progress on this. I am thinking of trying to take off some paint from brick. I need to know the amount of the stripper you need per sq. ft. to calculate my costs and figure out if it's worth it. I am just too jealous of the people I know with exposed brick in...

I don't know about the roof, but as far as expensive houses, remember it's more an issue of the property value and location, not the house's value that gets the house knocked down. In Meyerland, where this house is located you have relatively large lots (20,500 sq. ft for this one) and mostly one st...

Murphy's Law

This house is so tragic. I will shed a tear for Houston when it is gone. O'Quinn is one of the richest men in Houston. He has many cars that are more valuable than this house including a Batmobile and a JFK Limo, both of which would make a great picture with this house, come to think of it. He buys ...

Brilliant! I'm supposed to clean that thing out in February, but I never have. I am certain that the former owner probably never cleaned it either as she never really did any maintenance. So I'm intimidated by the prospect of making it a nice birdhouse. It's probably full of junk. The Chemosphere bi...

Funny you should mention fountains...

Hi all, We are in the middle of working out some backyard landscaping. Our landscaper is not specific to mid-century nor modern, but he does some really cool stuff. I told him I wanted a desert oasis and he came up with this "rockscape". It has large stones in a kidney shape with a 3 prong...

Howard Barnstone designed Center in Houston

The Center Serving Persons With Mental Retardation is currently being threatened in Houston. There is a petition to save it online. The real fight is less about the building (a Brutalist building by Howard Barnstone, 1966) and more about the rights to lease the property and serve the mentally challe...

I could be wrong, but I think only 2 original homes are left on that street. I would love to see some kind of pictoral of all the ones that have been lost to multi-resident townhomes. The orange chair and a recent pic...

Hey all, As for the orange chair, I did see a picture of one in the Cory Buckner book on A Quincy Jones. The house is The Fareed House, 1949 Los Angeles. So I assume the furniture was made around that time. I was very excited to see it. Here's a pic I took with my Aunt's camera around Christmas (hen...

It's a cool house from the front, but it has some undoing to be done inside from the purist's standpoint. There's an addition on the back and someone walled in a doorway or 2. That front room is great though! I went to the open house. It's a great location for someone who works downtown or even med....

Besides Ebay-where to go for back issues of 50's magazines?

Hi everyone, I have been doing some research on the architect of my house, William Jenkins, of Houston, and I found out that he was published in several magazines. I am looking for them on ebay, but was wondering if anyone has found magazines through other places. I'm looking for: House and Home: Se...

SDR and all, The party was great. We had several of the most respected modernists in Houston here to see the house and everyone seemed impressed with the results. Don't paint the ceilings!

Don't paint the ceilings! I would love it if mine weren't painted, but once you do that it's hard to go back.
It's a very lovely house. Once your friends and family see you loving it they will fall in line.
