i don't think we can use metal or tile on it since the roofline is parabolic - somewhat like a pagoda. the increasing radius is more evident from the inside: http://home.comcast.net/~jhameedi/DSCN0727_sm.JPG anyway - what about something like a cedar shake shingle? some of the japanese temples i've ...

ditto to the responses above. ideally i would want the fence to look like it was designed by the original architect and installed when the house was built. we have a somewhat related issue because we have to rebuild an orginal brick retaining wall that is falling apart. it uses the same brick as the...

our house has been painted and solid stained over for many years. there is redwood underneath. so i decided i would try to strip a grate cover that hides the gas meter (visions of grandeur: if it went well - we could strip the entire house and recover the redwood T&G siding...) after a couple of...

Doesn't anyone buy orange carpeting anymore?

Problem: we need to carpet our stairs + landing. It originally came with orange carpeting to match the tones of the stained glass next to the front door: http://home.comcast.net/~jhameedi/DSCN0724_small.JPG When we remodeled - we tore up the carpet because it was trashed. And hoped for some cool woo...

insulating without ruining siding

ive heard that there are some ways you can blow in free form insulation into exterior walls without being invasive to the existing siding. we have redwood siding, its in great condition and don't want to take it down, but our exterior walls are COLD - especially the north one.

any thoughts?

everytime i see a window like that i think that would be cool as a mitred window. they are SO cool. i know, you have to design the header accordingly and the insulation leaves a bit to be desired, but hey - just about everyone on this board lives in a warm (ok - warmer than michigan) climate!

having seen the farnsworth house (a "less is more" mies van der rohe expression) in pictures and books - i too was thinking the house would be cold and sterile (travertine marble floors, all glass/steel i-beam walls, etc). but when i visited the house, i was amazed at the surreal feeling of being on...
