Bird repellant...

I was just in Ecuador at a reserve with hundreds of birds. They had CDs hanging down from the eaves in front of each window. Not a very pretty solution though.

Good gardener in Long Beach?

Does anyone in Long Beach have a decent gardener they can refer me to? I am looking for someone who isn't confused by cacti and succulents. Is there a gardener who has a mower and a blower? Possibly a RAKE for my D.G.? Someone who might actually pick a weed, etc.? Please let me know if you do. Thank...

FADO Globe replacement

I am looking for a replacement for the IKEA FADO globe light. IKEA doesn't stock it any longer. I have searched the MANY lighting threads, but many of the links are out of date. Has any one recently purchased a globe pendant light for exterior use? I bought the FADO at IKEA a year or two ago. It was...

I just bought one of the reproduction Eichler escutcheons from Jonathan in Orange, CA; see http://www.eichlerforsale.com/Eichler_Door_Kit It is a very solid, beautiful piece of work and well worth the price in my opinion. If I had my druthers, the knobset would be Schlage instead of Kwikset, but th...

I live in Cal Heights and know a couple people who have been happy with Milton's Painting (562) 595-7617. Not sure about the beam repair.

The new entry looks great. I really hate glass block too. It's nice to see someone un-flip a house. Nothing like undoing someone else's really bad ideas. Damn, I see those horrible Home Depot front doors everywhere. I honestly can't say I ever seen one and thought it looked good or appropriate, no m...

Built-up tar and gravel roof

I have a MCM in Cal Heights in Long Beach. Last year I had LB Roofing tear off two layers of old roofs and install a new tar and gravel roof with 1 1/2" Polyiso roof insulation underneath. Tar and gravel looks the best. It is NOT cheap even without the Polyiso. Shingle is cheaper, but can easil...

I know exactly the place you're talking about. I thought they just did screens and screen doors. I'll give them a call.

Thanks!

Joe, I appreciate your input. I wouldn't say I'm "dead set" on replacing them, but I'm leaning that way. As for leafy trees, those aren't an option with my landscaping, and I'm not sure how much noise reduction these would provide. I wouldn't want to cover up the 3 large palm trees in the ...

Thanks for the advice. I think I read your earlier post about your windows. I'll look around for a company that can do frameless panes. I agree, I like to control how the house breathes. Isn't that why most of the windows open. You had some casement windows replaced too right? Mine are either stucco...

Clerestory window dilemma

I'm looking to replace the glass in the clerestory windows in my bedrooms for a few reasons. 1. I live VERY close to the airport. When the house was built, 1954, there wasn't much air traffic. The current windows have almost no noise reduction. 2. They are directly above the bed. In earthquake count...

forum question why do lines wrap / stretch across the screen

Can anyone tell me how to consistantly view these posts with long lines wrapped? Some pages are fine. With others, as the page initially loads, long lines are wrapped. Then, once the page is loaded, they are not. I am on a 12" PowerBook and it makes it really annoying to scroll way to the right...

The roof looks great. I got an estimate about 6 mos. ago from Mike at LB roofing, but put it off and haven't gotten any more estimates. I'm back to getting bids for the roof. I wanted to get a couple more to compare to LB. When I spoke to them earlier this year they were friendly and honest. Did you...

Not much help, but

I don't have too much information for you regarding the electrical code. There is a book out there called, "Ugly's Electrical Reference", that I've heard electricians reference. It's cheap, $10-12. But, I was wondering where you got your globe lights. I am looking for 1 from my front porch. Thanks
