Update on the Dreaded Painted Paneling

The story so far: Seventeen years ago, some idiot (me) painted the paneling in our living/dining room. I've thought about restoring the paneling for ages, and posted some questions here a few years ago. (Yes, years! My family is very patient about living amidst "works in progress.") I'm fi...

Egads , the fireplace insert is a relatively recent addition- probably from the early 90s or late 80s. We love it in the colder months, so it's not something we want to get rid of now... it's just so emblematic of our haphazardly-put-together-and-maintained house. (I'm sure it would have been a pai...

Updating this- I don't know why the BB code is such a struggle for me now! Aha! I just found a Polaroid of paneling (and a very cute boy who is now a senior in high school). This is the L across from the fireplace- a wall of built-in shelves and storage cabinets. Sculpted beige carpeting- I don't mi...

Thanks, egads ! We've got something close to a wall of windows on the longest wall- three plate glass panels, approx. 4' by 6'. They face East- the room doesn't get a lot of afternoon sun. The windows flank a 10' wide floor to ceiling rock fireplace and hearth, so there is a lot goin' on on that sid...

The Dreaded Painted Paneling

Hi all, My c1955 house is what you might charitably call "undistinguished," so I'm always trying to emphasize the MCM vibe. The house seems to have been finished by inept handyman types whose motto was "Why scrimp when you can cheap out?" When I moved in fourteen years ago, I was...

Martha Stewart Goes to Palm Springs

With a side-trip to John Lautner's Elrod House: http://www.themarthablog.com/2009/09/photos-from-my-trip-to-palm-springs.html She just tweeted that her show tomorrow will be set in Palm Springs, and apparently there's a Palm Springs spread in MSL's October Issue. Enjoy the Martha, Martha, Martha!

The strange thing was they kept mentioning how they wanted to keep the "mid-century modern feel" and then would do something completely weird, like installing stained glass windows with FLW motifs. I would love to see a show where someone was trying to bring back their mid-century home &am...

While You're Watching HGTV...

"Beyond the Box" is a relatively new show about modern design without a high price-tag. Though it centers on new buildings rather than MCM, I really like this show, as it seems 180 degrees away from the usual "give me granite countertops or give me death" HGTV homeowners. A lot o...

MCM (?) on HGTV's Curb Appeal

Surfing around this evening, I came across an episode of Curb Appeal on HGTV with a mid-century bent: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_crb/episode/0,1806,HGTV_3825_45460,00.html It will be on again tonight, and then again in January. Did anyone else catch this? I don't want to kvetch too much as I onl...

Just heard a story about the book on KQED's California Report: http://www.californiareport.org/ Cliff May is hardly a household name, but the homes he designed went a long way toward defining California living in the mid-20th century. May's suburban ranch homes were inspired by his Spanish heritage ...

Thanks so much for checking it out, Modfan-- you're the tops! Stellar detective work. Next time I'm down that way I'll definitely take a tour of the neighborhood. It's a shame about the Home Depot-ization, but I suppose that was to be expected.
Cheers,
Jean

Josquin, I love your bath! Is the Pomona tile original to the house? I remember reading somewhere that Saul Bass designed a line for Pomona tile. I wonder if the tile mural at tile at CSH 20 is from that line. The tiles themselves certainly aren't elaborate. I wonder if a reasonable match could be f...
