The only way I'd rip it all out and replace is if I were significantly boosting the energy efficiency of my home. Fiberglass batts hold their R value pretty well over time and usually needs to be replaced only if they get damaged or something severe. Drywall is like that too, from what I've learned....

I think it looks really cool. I don't like the kitchen cabinets or fixtures, but the fireplace is great and the exterior is nice. I wouldn't keep the lighthouse either. :)

post50modern: LOL, my thoughts exactly. I drive by that house every day on my way home from work and I always thought that the owners would have super good furniture and decor, but boy was I wrong! Guess they spent all of the money on the addition. Too bad the lot next to it was sold to someone who ...

Raleigh, NC homes submitted to the historic register

Saw this article in our local paper today that I thought I'd pass along. Looks like two modern ranches, an entire subdivision, and a old Corning plant were submitted to the Historic Register. Normally I read about this stuff happening in other cities where I don't live, so its nice to read one about...

I've been meaning to post these photos of our attempt at a modern nursery for weeks, but never took the time to do so. Now that the baby is only weeks away, I figured it was now or never! I had a lot of inspiration from looking at the photos elsewhere in this thread. I did all of the renovation work...

The idea or attitude that a vegetable garden or array of fruit trees prevents your home from being modern really gets under my skin. We are surrounded by all sorts of plants in this world and I know of no worthy reason why one should avoid keeping and tending to the plants that provide food to eat a...

An FAQ would be great. Just to help future search engine users, I went with the Pella Impervia line. They offer some styles that look good on modern homes--lots of sliders, picture, and a double hung with called the Contemporary Unit, which have unequal sash sizes (upper is 60%, lower is 40%). A cas...

For what it's worth to others, I did a lot of research into vinyl windows and had 3 local outfits with good reputations give me estimates to replace the 6 windows in my house. Five are 36W x 74H, one is 36W x 38H. I was stunned to find out that the estimate for Pella Impervia fiberglass windows was ...

For those of you who have vinyl or fiberglass replacement windows, would you mind sharing the brand that you used? Two options that are interesting me are the Gorell vinyls and the Pella Impervia fiberglass, but I'm still open to other brands as long as I can get a reliable installer when using them.

I'm glad this topic came up because I'm planning on replacing the windows in my house next year, and vinyl is one of the options I'm considering. My main priority is energy efficiency at an affordable price, but I also want my new windows to improve my view. A previous owner of my house installed vi...

Personally, I would just replace the doors with some that have knobs on the sides. Function ought to be the most important part of a design. If the door can't be opened, is it really a door?

Just my opinion, but I don't think DWR prices are reasonable at all for the average family. If you are in search of designer pieces with a name go with them, then DWR is a place for you. If you are just looking for a good quality couch that looks good to you, meets your needs, and doesn't break the ...

My ranch home isn't a MCM, more of a 70s comtemporary design, but we have a ceiling that looks rather similar (althought it is vaulted and covers the living and dining room areas) and posed the same problem when we first moved in. I'm not bursting at the seams with money, so the links I'm providing ...
