Claremont, CA Cliff May $499,000

Nicely 'restovated' Cliff May modern ranch house just inside Claremont city limit. Very much like the Long Beach ranchos, but of slightly later vintage, I think. The kitchen has been nicely updated but keeps the original Western-Holly oven! https://www.redfin.com/CA/Claremont/143-W-American-Ave-9171...

We removed those two back-to-back closets altogether. It really opened up the entry area and eliminated the tunnel-like feeling of the corridor between the bedrooms.
It made the utility closet more of a utility core.

You know, when you look at so many of the properties listed in the Mid Century Real Estate section of Lotta Living, most of them with seven figure price tags are really unattainable for most readers. Sure it's fun to fantasize, but here's one that probably anyone could afford. It's nice to see more ...

I drive by the Montclair Cliff Mays occasionally just to see if anyone is fixing them up. I'd say there are about 18 or 20 of them in the neighborhood. Yup, really dreadful, but you've got to give them points for consistency. You rarely see a theme carried out so thoroughly. It doesn't look cheap either. I guess for people who like this sort of thing, it's the sort of thing those people would like.

"Torch Song" A mid-century modern 'masterpiece'.

Just watched the Joan Crawford potboiler "Torch Song" on TCM. Made in 1952, the movie features Joan Crawford, but the real star of the movie is the remarkable mid century modern set design of Joan's Manhattan apartment. I found a blogger -- a kindred spirit -- who pays homage to the film, ...

Well, certainly if you can get the original architect or if you have the bucks to hire Marmol Radziner or some other firm that specializes in that sort of thing, that's a whole other ballgame. I’m hardly an MCM purist and I can understand the practical reasons to update the infrastructure of vintage homes, but I was somewhat startled and put off by the very first suggestion in this guide. “…The foundations are solid- enough to support a second story addition (when desired)…” . In case this causes confusion to non-CA folks, it is possible for house taxes to go down in CA. Many went down last year, as mine did, based on new valuations in the current market. Etc... Bravo/Brava! This is a very clear and succinct explanation...even for those of us who do live in CA. Thanks!

Well, as hideous as the roof addition is, you have to agree it was a good way to conceal the aluminum-duct spider on the roof that you see on so many homes of this type. So any buyer would have to decide whether to remove the roof addition and with it the ducting and central air, or to restore the h...
