oh my - such a lot of bad advice! That's not a european appliance, what you have there is a north american clothes dryer plug. Electric heaters actually draw more power than any other appliance, so I don't think you could possibly get a step-up transformer with enough capacity. So, get a new outlet ...

I wasn't even a poster on that thread, and I was just going to slink away to my own sandbox, but I feel like I have to say that your "this is america: first you get the money, then you get the power, then you can do whatever you want" argument is pretty much counter to the whole preservati...

Yeah I think it was $6mil now that you mention it.. I recall that when it was for sale there was a CAD$10 million lottery and I realized that even with that I still couldn't afford it. Sigh. But it is sublime.

Thanks for finding these additional photos. This house is on 5 acres, which is an almost unbelievable amount of land for the hills. Not sure how much of that is flat, but we can be thankful it wasn't demoed to make space for an oprah-style estate. I think it was on the market for 10 million? Here's ...

I believe that's water under the dining room. Image

It's like a scene out of Blake Edwards' The Party. I wonder how many guests have got loaded and fallen in. Amazing - but what is that onyx light fixture doing in there?

Whiteonwhite not quite up to original quality (the upholstery is never quite as smooth and taut as the high end stuff) but for what they charge it's fine. Their PK wicker chairs are quite well done. Anyway, I would have loved a ball chair when I was a young lad.

while I hate unfaithful reproductions and strive to buy originals when I can, I think the case of an 8-year-olds room allows for some flexibility. Whiteonwhite sells a ball chair for $600, may be the same repro you see elsewhere.

I think that's a lacquer kitchen that was updated after the house was built. It unfortunately has the same color and oak trim (handles) as that typical kitchen you see everywhere. I think you see that kitchen everywhere as before the advent of Home Despot, you basically had a choice of Beaver Lumber...

Toronto, ON $4Mil 'teardown'

I love these Bridle Path homes that look like modest ranchers from the front but are actually huge inside. Sadly, they are all being torn down and replaced with faux chateaus. if you look at the sectional piece on the right side of this, you could get two of them and put them perpendicular to the screen with coffee table in the middle: face each other for conversation or swing your feet up and relax for TV. Again this is an expensive piece but there are many similar secti...

If the furniture features cup-holders and a handle on the side, keep looking. I never saw the appeal of recliners to be honest with you. You end up looking at the ceiling. My vote would be for something like the B&B Harry sofa: http://www.momist.com/files/ab_usergoodsimages.Image/1/3/189.JPG Ple...

There is a house similar to this where I grew up (located in King Cross estates, along with a lot of cool 60's and 70's homes).
