There was an interesting portion in Visual Acoustics which chronicled Julius Shulman's decision to "retire" from architectural photography because of the growing popularity of post-modern architecture. Can't say I blame him.

Like Rockland, our house is post and beam construction with a flat roof. Here is a picture of the master bathroom with skylight. All the light in the photo is natural.

How about a few strategically placed skylights? We have them in our bathrooms, which are otherwise windowless, and they provide a nice amount of natural light. If, you'll be re-doing the roof, that's the time to do it.

On our flat roof in New York, we used a rubber membrane roof. So far, so good through snow, hail, ice storms, a nor-easter and 100 degree heat. We painted the black rubber gray.

Do you have pics of the original cabinets and kitchen? I've never seen what an original Techbuilt kitchen looks like. Were they standard issue, or did each builder do his own thing? Even pulled out my copy of "At Home With Tomorrow" to see what I could find. Hardly any mention of the kitch...

I'd call in a structural engineer to have a look. They will be able to tell you what needs to be done to remedy the situation.

I love the "natural look". Moss is one of my favorite natural surfaces. That said, it can look out of place in ultra modern-minimal settings. I think your place looks great the way it is.....also, maintenance is easier than always keeping it perfectly clean and spotless.

Great house but it looks to me like it needs a good amount of work. Too bad that the previous owner(s) went so crazy with the paint. Were the ceilings and paneled wall surfaces originally not painted?

Although I prefer the look of sharp corners, you both make excellent points. If original corners were rounded, then I deffer to your better judgment.

I think Rockland hit the nail on the head-overall a great job! The Kitchen Island doesn't work for me either. The biggest problem for me, is the rounded corners. Everything else is so angular...why introduce another element. That said, a lovely renovation.

The suspense is killing me. Not to make light of your situation, but this is more intriguing than any movie or tv show I have seen recently. I hope the plumber finds the problem today. I had a pipe freeze a few years ago and the damage caused was substantial. I filed a claim with my insurer and they...
