Very cool. Are there many MCM's in the Lubbock area? More so than you'd think there would be. And, like I said, they're vastly underappreciated and not immune to the teardown cancer (example- once I knocked on the door of a house @ 43rd and Hartford to ask if they minded if I took some photographs ...

Lubbock, Texas - so cool, under $200K! (Cliff May-ish)

Just returned from my annual family incarceration, ahem , I mean "holiday togetherness time" in Lubbock, Texas. While fairly isolated, this city of 250,000 is home to Texas Tech University, and we all know college towns usually have some good architecture, and Lubbock does not disappoint. ...

Edina, MN: (one of) Wexler's First House(s)

Legendary Don Wexler was born & raised in Minneapolis, and graduated from the University of Minnesota's School of Architecture. I call dibbs on this house (should I win the Powerball tomorrow as planned): http://www.21homesearch.com/search.cfm?action=email_listing_detail&property_id=3586539

IMO, the Lovness estate is almost a bargain. You have all that wooded acreage within what is considered the Twin Cities 7-County Metro Area, 20 minutes to St. Paul and 30 minutes to Minneapolis. You get the plans for additional cottages. It's an architecture lover's dream, it could make for a great ...

Minnetonka, MN- Elizabeth Close AIA - teardown danger?

Very nice MCM in a very nice area at a decent price. Of course, the listing agents are suggesting teardown as a possibility.

Saint Paul, MN- huge stone & brick rambler- just beauti

This is one of my favorite houses in Saint Paul, located in Highland Park. I've been in it a few times and I can vouch that the photographs do not do it justice. A couple of touch-ups to remove some of the interior desecrations, and this would be my dream home. Hope someone who can afford it ($1.5M)...

My parents live in Lubbock, and I know of one of these developments. It's south of 50th Street & bordered on the east by University Avenue. I've driven through it several times, and it's kind of sad. It's not "ghetto", but it is definitely looking quite past its prime. Unfortunately, given the natur...

The house is being offered at $1 if someone can arrange to move it. These Erdman Prefabs are really interesting. Unfortunately, I would hate to calculate the costs of moving it 300 miles up I-94 so I could have it! Another Erdman Prefab was moved from central Madison, WI to a location about 30 miles...

GALLERY ADDITIONS!!

Hi, everyone! I have posted some pix in two albums. First, since the Gobbler motel is now gone, this place has to take James Lileks' title of "Grooviest Motel in Wisconsin" (albeit, it's much more tasteful than the Gobbler)...the Karakahl Country Inn, posted in the Motels/Hotels album: http://www.lo...

UH-OH!!! I think I Really Did It Now

Ummmm, BIG problem. I tried posting some more pix under the Upper Midwest album in the Residential section, and I got that message, again, that indicated my photo didn't post because it couldn't create a thumbnail. SOOOO, I hit the link that said "Rebuild Thumbnails" AND ALL OF THEM DISAPPEARED! The...

I can only assume the windows are Dual-Pane/Thermopane. As far as the roof goes, I'm going to have to do a drive-by and see what it is made of. I've seen gravel-rock roofing here in MN, it's not all that uncommon (the house I posted a few posts down in Sunfish Lake, MN has a gravel roof. There's a r...

Couple of neat Midwestern Modern houses (over 60 pix of one)

Couple of nifty listings came up this week here in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area. First is this awfully swell house in original condition designed by Elizabeth Close in 1950 (this is the one that has over 60 images!) http://www.mnhouses.com/2066Knapp/2066.htm The other discovery is this simp...

If you have access to a good architectural library, I know there was an article on these houses in an issue of Architecture Minnesota back in the mid-to-late '80's. I hope I'm not out of luck posting here, as I think I'm the only representative of the Midwest on these boards, but, it's worth a shot... I'm looking to find out some information on the line of prefabricated houses put out by the Marshall Erdman Company of Madison, WI. Erdman is most famous for buil...

Not much help, but...

I just discovered this posting of yours. I am very rusty on the subject, but yes...there was a series of plywood houses designed as case studies in the early 1950's that I know of. The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis had a reconstruction of one of these houses in their gallery about 2 years ago. I ...

Alfred Browning Parker

You might be well-served to dig up some information on Alfred Browning Parker. He was a Taliesinite who practiced in Florida, adapting Wrightian principles to the Florida lifestyle and available materials. Parker's work appeared quite a bit in late '50's and early '60's issues of House Beautiful (if...
