Hmmmm. I lived in Westchester County for 13 years - luckily moved to central CT before buying a house (or paying those taxes.)

At $949k, that house is almost the value of any plain-old house there on 2 acres of land. You get the neato-designed house for free....

we have far too many aluminum pans to make induction an option... including the morning coffee ritual with the aluminum moka pot. Probably too late to help with your remodel, but to add something to the thread: Like you, after we bought our house, we wanted the response of gas but didn't have city ...

Like my wife (jkc) said, thanks all for the kind words. We're really happy that we didn't move in right away - we kept 2 months (and a pile of money) free for initial work. We're also happy that we focused a lot on improving the fabric of the house. It was pretty disheartening to go through the seve...

We're facing the same problem. We finally found a contractor who will do a thorough job (we want everything stripped to the Tectum roof deck, and the cost isn't much more.) But we can't decide between light grey TPO and tar and gravel. The 39 square roof on our CT house is, well, staggeringly expens...

did i understand correctly that you the exterior of your roof is tongue and groove? I have never heard of an exposed tongue and groove wood roof. In jkc's original post, the T&G = tar and gravel. That's the roof that's on the house now. It could also stand for tar and grass given the state of t...

Looks fabulous - couple of questions - did you have any transitions between rooms or just straight Marmoleum? I know you've ordered baseboard for the walls etc We're going to need new flooring in our ranch and Marmoleum looks like it might be ideal for the kitchen, but we're thinking of going back t...

That looks amazing - so glad to see how well the original cabinets looks in a more updated (or at least not drab country) color scheme. What's the new floor? Also are the new fixtures the one's above the kitchen sink? - love those. Of course the pendant in the den is great (but that looks original)....

Thanks

All, Thanks for your kind words Craig - we saw the Hartford house you renovated when it was for sale last year, definitely interested in an East coast tour (your new place looks fascinating). SDR/domus48 - the roof is an area that needs work sooner rather than later - the existing tar & gravel r...

our new CT modern

Hi, My husband (aka Mutcth) have been lurking here for a while. I’ve tried to register under my own name over the last couple of weeks, but this seems to be taking a while (evil spammers have swamped the registration process) so I’m posting under his…hope that’s OK… We’ve just found a MC...

More checking: we found 2" Tectum specced on the plans. As a back-up (to insure that they didn't put in "Asbestum" instead to save a few bucks), I grabbed a sample to be tested. Given that it's wood fibers and concrete, it's pretty impressive that it held up outside of the house on th...

Thanks Joe. Looking at more threads, it looks like they're Tectum, a pretty expensive sound deadening tile (but I welcome other guesses.) I'm amazed that they used it throughout the house and I sure would like to keep it. Happily, Tectum claims to never have used asbestos. Still want to confirm that...

Good to hear that worked out for you! I think that's what we're going to do - have someone consult on this who can do the analysis. The entire roof surface, including extending outside to the soffits, is covered by these tiles. They look a bit like spun fiberglass with a spaghetti-like pattern. Just...

What are these ceiling tiles??

Hi, Relatively new here - we're looking for a MCM in CT and just looked at one today we really like - going to need some work though! We have a question about the ceiling tiles - the house is a brick ranch built in 1959, there are these fibrous textured tiles on the ceiling (it's pitched) which cont...

Craig, it's a great house in a really nice neighborhood - looks like you did a great job with the restoration. We went through it at an open house yesterday. Sadly, it's about $90k beyond us at this point, so the search continues. (It was very popular during the open house - maybe it will sit on the...

First one in Hartford was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice Robert Carroll May, who lived and worked in Hartford from 1948-1960 and designed several modern homes there. (See http://www.craigholmes.net/RCM/home.htm , especially the Life page for a list of what I have found) The Bassevitch ho...

We're looking in CT (around Hartford) as well. Since we don't want to do the commute from North Haven, which seems to be a hotbed of MCM in this state, it's a bit of a slow search. Wish we could afford that house in Brookfield.... Take a look at earlier topics for a Techbuilt MCM house in Newtown CT...
