Pond for sure

We put a pond in our atrium, and it really brings life to our home. The sound of running water relaxes and the fish and turtles are always amusing. It is the first thing anyone sees when they enter and it always gets a comment. The nice thing about it's placement in the atrium, you don't have to wor...

Install

Basically they replace your edge metal and this may add 1/2 to 3/4" to the profile of your fascia boards. Not noticeable in my opinion. Then they spray the foam directly over your existing roof if it is in good enough shape. The process also covers all of the flashing points, chimmney, plumbing...

Took the plunge

So we went ahead with the foam roofing. The process was very painless and the contractor did a comprehensive job. My roof now sparkles white in the sunlight. Hopefully it live up to the promise and help to keep things a bit cooler around here, but with the June gloom setting in a month early we prob...

Can you give me a ballpark per sq/ft? My roof does not need to be replaced because of water problems. I really want to get some insulation up there. So I don't want to go through the tearoff problem. You can let me know privately if you wish. I will also be calling them tommorrow. Cheers Paul

So I contacted these folks after talking to Airthane (they won't do a roof under 10000 sq/ft). Their product seems to be on the money for my flat roof application, but does anyone have any recent experience with them or a contractor who works with their product? Paul P.S. My roof doesn't leak water ...

I had this material as a driveway surface on an old house. We discovered that the manufacturer recomends that it be powerwashed and re-epoxied every two to three years. Now obviously this was in an outdoor application and in an indoor environment the surface would not take the solar beating or have ...

We did a 3 1/2" x 3/4" birch molding in the whole house. We didn't have it milled, but we did have it laquered off site. In the sanding and finishing process the edge was inevitably softened. The offf site finish allowed a superior level of finish to be achieved w/o intrusion on the rest of our proj...

Don't do pergo. We had it in our last house and hated it. We just installed prefinished bamboo in the whole house and so far we love it. The pre finishing saved on time of install and on the mess. I think that it took three days to do 2000 feet. One thing to consider is the curing on site. The mater...

You may also look for the tell tale lamination. Some older homes have had this done. It's a code thing on the sliding portion of glass sliders. That said a friend of mine lost a 5x8 panel in the earthquake the other day. It was not tempered and now he fears for his dogs and children. He has 8 panels...

I assume that you bought the Milgard sliding glass doors with the brushed aluminum finish. When I called to inquire about an upgrade the customer service specialist sighed and said "You are like the 10th person to tell me that today. I keep telling them but they won't listen" I think an email attack...

I am particularly impressed with the "Long Box", the one with the sliding doors. http://www.danieldonnelly.com/n_storage.htm Anyone on the boards wh...

IKEA hell

My wife jokes about my "IKEA threshold" About 30 minutes into the store I begin to behave like a rat in a maze. I either want a treat or to escape. I know they love the meatball thing but they make me want to hurl. The stupid names give me the heebie-jeebies, but they do do affordable modernism, and...

So my wife and I made the trek to IKEA to buy some outdoor furniture yesterday and it was on sale. Horray! But much to my chagrin it was because they were clearing it out. Summer is over at IKEA. I bet you can still race your dogsled in Sweden. Summer doesn't even officially until the solstice on Ju...

To pre hang or not to pre hang

You can get these doors from other less impersonal sources. We bought all our doors pre-hung at a local mill for the same cost as Home Depot not pre-hung. The advantage is twofold. First, you can poly the jambs if yours have been previously painted, as mine were. Second, you can hang the doors yours...

This house was a one owner event. Val was a big band leader and owned the local music store up here in Montrose (CA). They moved in in 1960 just after the house was built. The party room was added by Web Wiley in 1963. I'm trying to get some pics of the house from the early years. I think that this ...

New Furniture with a mid century flair

I just came back from a long drive to Room and Board in Santa Ana. They have a ton of stuff that will look great in our home, and they have a "Modern Portfolio" of fabrics, that includes a great sunburst pattern. Some of the chairs have great lines. Check it out http://www.roomandboard.com Cheers Paul
