1965 William Pereira LACMA buildings endangered

LACMA wants to tear down their MCM buildings. WTF? Didn't they just have a high profile exhibit called "California Design 1930-1965, Living In A Modern Way"? It's unconscionable. Maybe they should just leave all the paintings and sculptures and stuff in the buildings when they bulldoze the...

SUCCESS!! Thanks for all of your advice. The project came together better than I expected. My house is a 1982 ranch, a basic 3 bedroom shoebox, and it retains many of its builder-level 1982 finishes. The fireplace was particularly offensive; poorly proportioned and covered with cheap tile and a badl...

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I think what I will do is cut the 4x8 sheets down to 3 feet wide so they don't look so much like 4x8 sheets of plywood on the wall, and lightly chamfer the edges. I'll use the 1x8 foot pieces to make a lighting valance.

Mahogany paneled walls - how to?

In my continuing effort to bring my 1982 ranch house back in time about 25 years, I want to replace the bad 80s tile surrounding the fireplace with ledgestone and panel over the rest of the wall with Sapele (tiger stripe mahogany). In pictures of Neutra houses and Eichler houses, there are vast expa...

It's TRUE! Frank's is back and the food is just as good as ever - PLUS the Home Depot Tuscan light fixtures and neon beer signs have been removed. Try the roast turkey on grilled sourdough. It's real turkey - not processed prepackaged junk.

I LOVE FRANK'S!

OK - which one of you rented out your house for this commercial?

I absolutely love the room divider screen that makes Moire patterns out of two sets of offset circles.

Frank's is sadly no more. Even though it wasn't as splendid as it was a few years back when Frank was still running it, it was still a solid breakfast and sandwich place. I was optimistic when it was featured in the movie Larry Crowne, with Tom Hanks, but even that couldn't keep the doors open. RIP ...

I remember, because I was there! With Rebecca and the Friends of The Derby. That town hall meeting was something else, and I like to think my little speech in front of the city commission helped with the historical designation.

if you're in the bay area, check out Original Joe's of Westlake!

Great MCM restaurant architecture plus great food. Avoid being seated in the Cascade Room, opt for a seat at the counter and watch the frenetic activity at the grill--

They call that a renovation? Where are the home depot vinyl gridded windows? Where are the carved panel fake oak kitchen cabinets? They didn't even block off the clerestory windows. The front door better be a 6 panel job with the fanlight window at the top. Seriously, that is a very nice looking pla...

1000+ pages of vintage photos - car centric

the Jalopy Journal has a thread that exceeds 1000 pages of fascinating photos of days gone by. Since the site is vintage-car specific, almost all of the pictures feature vintage iron. I just spent an hour going through the first fifteen pages. If you have time to kill, this is the way to do it! http...
