welcome to denver! I hope you enjoy your fantastic new place. like yourself, I just purchased my MCM here in the denver area. I'm over in lakewood. You'll find there is pretty good support for the MCM group here. we have a couple of fabulous realtors that exclusively work with modern, and several st...

thanks for all the advice. I'm going to visit lowes and check out those glass doors and see if they have a size that fits. I'll also call a few more chimney companies to see if I can get the flu repaired. one or both solutions should solve my drafty living room problem.

Fireplace door options

I've posted a couple times here over the last couple months about my fireplace. Like many others, I have a 1955 wood burning that was converted over by a previous owner to gas logs. The flu has been disabled and there is now a major draft of cold air coming into the house as the weather here in Colo...

LOL. I also was caught off guard by the audio and animation. very educational site. too bad we don't have more stuff like that for DIY projects for MCM. excellent link. I'll have to go around and check faucets, but I don't think I have the money this fall to change out all my faucets. hopefully give...

I have two friends who installed bamboo floors in the last two years. both ended up pulling it back out and putting in tile. they complained of it being too soft and getting dented easily. also, one case there was water damage as it seems the floors are rather porous. it is quite possible they purch...

today I dug through my paperwork from when I bought the house. I found the number of the fireplace company that did the certification and got lots of answers: 1. apparently the pilot light went off at some point (most likely when I was playing with the controls) 2. I found out the floor key should a...

excellent list. this is just what I was looking for. I think I might have one other item and concern.... its my fire place. I have two concerns with it: 1. it had been updated at some point from wood burning to gas with fake logs. I can't figure out how to get the thing to work (although it was supp...

Winterizing for the first time

I could use some solid advice. I've owed three homes in my life, all in Nevada which doesn't really get very cold in winter. Last June I purchased my first MCM in denver colorado. I'm more than concerned about winterizing the house so that I don't do something stupid and have some plumbing freeze an...

nice job. I'm in planning stages on front courtyard and always looking for ideas. I'm curious about your fire pit... is it wood burning or did you run a gas line to it? I was going to try to check here in Lakewood, CO to see if the city has restrictions on wood burning fire pits and also find out wh...

well, I have an idea which is not a purist MCM solution, but you might look into the industrial aluminum trim with window type garage doors. I've seen several in the lynwood neighborhood here in denver with similar MCM homes. these doors remind me of 1960s mechanics shop industrial doors with all th...

I'm really wading in uncharted territory here. this is my first large scale makeover. I've seen lots of tv shows and just thought it might be smart to bring in an expert to help guide me thru it. my goal is a functional nice looking kitchen which is 'modern style' rather than home depot contemporary...

I attended the denver modernism show a couple weeks ago. at the show was a gentleman by the name of David Steers. he had a booth and was advertising himself as a 'historic preservation consultant' ... Ballpark costs to expect from a MCM consultant

yesterday an MCM consultant came over to review my kitchen makeover. he is going to be working up a bid for the makeover. he seems to know his stuff (he has a home in arapahoe acres here in denver). I'm curious what the going rate is for consultants like this and what kind of numbers might be reason...

I was looking for furniture on craigs list and stumbled on this listing: http://denver.craigslist.org/fur/392916058.html it looks like something I once saw in an MCM home, but I can't put my finger on it. I'm a newbie to MCM so I don't know much of my furniture classics yet. is this a classic keeper...

Roofing Contractor in Denver

when I bought my house my realtor got a quote from Reitz Roofing to have my roof redone. over the last 5 weeks I've called six times and left messages with the receptionist as well as trying the direct voicemail for the guy who is supposed to do the repair. I have money in escrow for the repair from...

Hmm... thats actually a good point. I looked and there is no cover on top. Its a bit humorous that I was trying to figure out how a moth and a wasp got into my house recently given both were big and loud enough for me to notice them coming in the door with me. I'm betting they came thru the chimney!...

Fireplace flue lever

I moved into my first MCM about 7 weeks ago. a couple days ago I decided to look at the flue on the fireplace. apparently the inspector never looked at it because it is stuck open and the lever is broken. that said, it was converted by the previous over to an ugly gas fire log unit which I plan to r...
