I was speaking of the exterior colors. The exterior of the house was blue (not a good blue), and almost every room inside the house was blue at some point. The architect told me that when the original owners insisted on painting the house blue, he never went back. The exterior colors are now what th...

Atlanta, GA. Ken Johnson's 1956 Zwecker House

http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab276/ajmod/burton/DSCN0014.jpg We will be listing our Ken Johnson home for sale in the coming weeks. If anyone in the Atlanta area is interested in seeing it before it hits the MLS, please send me a private message. Of the few homes he designed, this is the first...

SDR,
My dad is old school and makes a lot of his own finish concoctions. I'll have to ask him what it is in the tung oil that works so well. I do believe he uses the linseed oil and shellac combo a good bit.

I own a wood refinishing business and I would echo what SDR has said. The only thing I would add, is to try tung oil. After trying just about everything, I pretty much just use tung oil when refinishing interior wood in my MCM. Tung oil will bring out the grain and amber a bit, while still looking &...

Let's take a vote on exterior paint colors...

Ok, We've been going over and over this, and we still can't make a decision. It's time to paint the house and we have to make a decision. It doesn't look that horrible in this picture, but in person, the turquoise/teal is awful. My wife is thinking white. I'm thinking maybe a dark gray with white wi...

This house is amazing. We live in a Ken Johnson home and are just in love with it. We bought ours from the original owners in 2009 and are totally restoring it back to original condition. In researching Ken Johnson, I have discovered that he is an extremely important architect in Atlanta. We are for...

marittamodern, I think it would be great to have a LL house tour. Northcrest has one every year and DOCOMOMO still does one I think, but we should do one for LL people. I have some friends that live in great mods in Atlanta that don't post very often. I would need to wait until late spring, at least...

Just my 2 cents...

Try tung oil instead of stain. Apply liberally, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe off the excess. Apply 4-5 coats. Amber shellac works great on birch. Luan, mahogany, and walnut tend to look best with tung oil. That's just my opinion.

Good luck.

Today, I demo'd the old counter tops. Due to everyone's thoughts, I've saved the walnut edging to see how it looks when all is done.

By the way, 55-year-old greasy funkiness in the cracks and crevices of old counter tops in delightful. I only came close to vomiting once or twice...

Stephen and Gabby, thanks. I really appreciate it. One of the reason we bought this house is because it has so many original, custom details still intact. We bought from the original owners (in their 90's) that had to move into assisted living due to their health. The husband was an engineer, and he...

scowsa, Thanks. You can't really tell because of my crappy camera, but the walnut edging around the counter tops is actually in pretty bad shape. I have to replace the counter tops and I'm going to leave the edges off. You're right about the Panton thing. Years ago, I used to be a huge Panton/Joe Co...

A few progress pics

What a difference a year makes... The guest bedroom below was a nightmare. The original ribbon stripe mahogany paneling and trim had been 'pickled' and was absolutely wretched! Everyone thought the paneling would have to be replaced, but I was able to refinish and save it. By the way, all four walls...

Futura Girl, Thanks. I really like the speckled quartz as well, but we thought it would be too busy with the new 'classic white' speckled VCT floor we installed. For whatever reason, the original owners put these great walnut doors and face-frames in but left the inside of the cabinets as constructi...

egads, It's kind of a long story. There was a 150 ft pine, 3 feet in diameter, breaking up the front patio and about a foot from the front roof line. It had to go and there were several other pines that were diseased and in bad shape. Almost everything had to come out. We've just started re-landscap...

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q22/vocologist/housefront.jpg As you can see, the basement/terrace level gets cooked by the sun during the day. What to do first...

In terms of energy efficiency, what should we do first....replace some large single paned windows with double paned low-E, ...OR... start applying spray foam insulation above our drywall ceilings? Our roof is completely flat with a 2-month-old white TPO roof. In Atlanta, we probably have another mon...

We just had our completely flat roof redone in July. We had the original tar and gravel, and then multiple layers of rolled roofing over that. We tore everything off down to the decking (which was in surprisingly good shape), installed a one inch thick poly-iso board, and then a 60 mil white TPO mem...

Interior ceiling idea

Okay, I know even the mention of this idea will get some purists upset, but here's the idea anyway. We have a completely flat-roofed mid-century modern. The interior is very reminiscent of the Koenig House #1 and the Bailey House (minus the steel). We are going to start removing the drywall ceilings...

Gabby, This may sound a bit pretentious, but I don't mean it to. Does the TPO get dingy or mildew-ish looking over time? The only reason I ask is that the roof on our carport is in plain view because of the lot our house sits on. You basically look out over the carport roof when you walk out our fro...
