I'll keep it in mind when I'm in LA next. If you do get to LA, Lincoln Fabrics at Lincoln and Palms in Venice has a lot of vintage looking fabrics, plus some unusual vinyls. Yes- thanks. I think I've been there. I used to live in Mar Vista, and stumbled upon a really cool fabric store when i was th...

It's really neither masculine nor feminine in my mind. Most cars before the mid-fifties had a really different character with regards to colors and upholstery fabrics- i want my truck to have the simple look/feel of the 50's Karmann Ghia's- just with some funky fabric in place of the German cloth an...

Help with Upholstery fabrics

Hello I'm looking for some retro-modern upholstery fabric. The application will be to cover the original "bench" style seat in my 1958 F100 with something a little more fun, sophisticated, or tongue-in-cheek.. I have a couple of possible themes in mind, but am still in the "I'll know ...

SDR- you're an MCM dynamo :) That's a near perfect match. ...I was referring to a pattern that's mostly on the horizontal, with an occasional slash cut stone that matches its sister, creating a diagonal joint. It occurs randomly- but frequently enough to feel a regular part of the pattern. ...(PHEW)...

Weren't some of the mortar joints in that style of masonry on a diagonal, too?

Heres a source for the globe light- with fixture, pretty reasonable. http://www.farreys.com/lighting/westinghouse_outdoor/collection_other_transitional_post_mount_lanterns_66861.html These also arent bad. They're not a real MCM light, but kind of an interpretation- which I usually hate. Thing is, th...

Agreed. It seems like regardless of what approach is used, there is quite a bit of work in store in order to change the look.... I also really dig that basketweave! I might consider sistering to the existing 4x4 posts with a taller stud---- removing the existing wood basketweave straps and using the...

How about paint it a tasteful, pale grass color so that it recedes (and is all one color)- making it less obtrusive- then punctuate the fence line with some Italian Cypress??
Like every eight feet- on the same intervals as the fence posts, maybe....

...and then there's this weird little concept car. Definitely contrived from the Charger --but in a more cutesy way for sure. http://www.conceptcar.co.uk/concept-cars/images/ford-021c-1-72.jpg http://www.conceptcar.co.uk/concept-cars/images/ford-021c-2-72.jpg

All joking aside- I'll give a "YES" to the Charger. I'm not a huge muscle car fan anymore, but the oddness of the Chrysler products keeps me interested- I think they're groovy. Many Chryslers of the late 60's and early 70's took on a "Fuselage" styling- like the Charger, their fa...

Great post, SDR! Yes- FLW's asian inspirations are clear. Very cool. For the backyard and interior of our home, I try to stay with a south pacific or TIKI feel- just a little more refined. I considered the design of this gate with a pretty conservative intent. It is about 30-40 feet or so back from ...

AJ- those are fantastic! Here's something weird- I was going to build a bench very similar to that for outdoors. There's a little space beside our driveway against a block wall, and under a grapefruit tree. Something really long and low-- square ends w/ that detail. Cool! I LOVE that table! Very nic...

Hey guys- thanks for the compliments. My neighbors think I'm a little wacky for spending so much time building a privacy gate.
I can remain objective about their comments pretty easily, though- one of them has a wagon wheel in their front yard :)

"Midcentury" Gate

I wanted this to have a FLW-ish feel with the suspended rectangles- also to feel as if it belongs to our 1949 simple ranch, and not a Home Despot add-on. Here is a gallery to the complete build: http://www.ecreative1.com/galleries/Gate_Gallery/ I was nervous about the red- not very "Pop", ...
