La Cienega Lanes

This was also the Esprit building, remodeled out of Flippers into a really cool space. When Esprit went away, unfortunately Sav On Drugs went it and destroyed the multi-level interior. It's worse now. CVS has added wooden siding to the modern concrete exterior, and even colored awnings! But inside i...

Julius Shulman Exhibit

Wondering how this fits in with the upcoming exhibition of Shulman's work at the Desert Museum in Palm Springs in February....there is supposed to be a Rizzoli book in connection with it? This too is supposed to include never been shown photos.

Julius Shulman's date of birth

Julius Shulman was born October 10, 1910 - I'm sure because my birthday is October 10 (not 1910!!) and I mentioned it when I met him at a photo shoot of a MCM remodeled apt house in West Hollywood.
Triple 10, very lucky...

Berne Dr Meiselman

This is a truly beautiful home, with just the right contemporary touches to complement its MCM roots. The color scheme, landscaping, exterior lighting are all top notch. And it's on one of the nicest streets in the area.

Remodeled

An important note that is obvious if you view the slideshow - the house is not restored but remodeled and rehabbed. granite countertops and mosaic tiles were not in the original meiselmans.

Racquet Club

I was referring to the neighborhood, which is known as Racquet Club, and not the Alexander tract name. I wouldn't want anybody to confuse a Meiselman with an Alexander!

Berne Dr house

The house is in Racquet Club on Berne Dr, just south of via Escuela.
Literature out front says they're asking $749,000. This already sold once for over $700K. Pretty sure it's not been enlarged, so that would make it about 1200 sq ft.

His Y-chairs were the beginning of my love of modernism. I bought 6 of them without knowing what they were, and almost sold them at a garage sale for $20 each! They will always grace my home.

Timely posting, Tex. On February 19th, as part of modernism week, the Palm Springs Art Museum is opening the Frey II house for tours at $50 per. Frey bequeathed the house to the museum. Last time I looked, the time slots were filling fast.

Just had my new custom kitchen cabinets installed in my Palm Springs Alexander. I was surprised to find out that (some) custom cabinetmakers can produce cabinets much superior to Ikea for about the same or less cost. I did not want frameless, flush type cabinets. I wanted birch plywood with veneer, ...

We used commercial Mannington VCT throughout our Alexander home in Palm Springs, in the pattern "dalmation." We absolutely love it. To me it looks sort of like terrazzo, which is what I wish I could afford. http://www.mannington.com/commercial/resilient/style.asp?style_id=324&type=2 [/...

Very different when Biannale is going on

....at the Giardini. I've been once to the Architecture Biannale and once to the "art" one - fantastic. The Architecture one in (I think) 1996 featured works by Rem Koolhaas & Zaha Hadid. The saddest of all was the US Architecture Pavilion - it was all Disney.

another idea

when we bought our alexander in palm springs, the previous owners (flippers) left behind 3 concrete (?) laundry sinks of various sizes.
not sure of the intended plan, but they make the coolest planters for our breezeway and patio. and of course they have holes (drains) in the bottom.

Beverly Hills Robinson's

I hope someone will document the great Pereira designed Robinson's about to be demolished at Wilshire/Santa Monica Blvds.
There seems to be no outcry to save this stunning structure. Probably everybody knows it's a lost cause.
