Has anyone insulated their roof?

We have a Cliff May-style open-beam MCM. The place is a solar oven in summer and heating goes straight out the top of the roof in winter. Is this just one of downsides of finally living in our dream house?

La Habra CA tract

I grew up in a 1955 MCM tract southwest of the Beach Blvd. and Whittier Blvd. intersection. Anyone have any information on the builder? The layout is very similar to the MCM we live in in Anaheim (northeast of Loara and Ball north of the Cliff May tract off Balll) and we think it might be the same b...

I always thought Jack-and-Jill bedrooms had a bathroom between them. Funny--the Ikea Kassett boxes are our favorite storage item. I'm just afraid the sun will deteriorate the cardboard. I could always paint them with some UV resistant paint I suppose. Hey, I'm handy :) My husband and I are looking f...

Closets between bedrooms

My only photo is on my computer not on a website, so forgive me. I have two bedrooms on the end of the house with a wood divider that has closets staggered facing each bedroom with a large ledge above each at the clerestory windows and the peak of the ceiling. What is this "ledge" called a...

We're actively exploring A/C too. During this heat spell, who isn't? We're looking at a mini-split system. I just wish we could pull the roof off and insulate at the same time, as well as take care of some wiring and lighting issues while the roof is off. But the roof is only 5 years old and reality...

The Sins of Ceiling Fans

Ok--#36 of the 100 Ways to Screw up your MCM list is installing a ceiling fan in a vaulted, exposed beam/t&g ceiling. I'm not sure I agree with this. Here's our living room: http://www.flickr.com/photos/75499747@N06/7846695532/in/set-72157631213415638/ And here's a Minka model we really like: ht...

Thanks all for the photo advice and input. I've been thinking shade control on the windows but husband wants to slay the gable dragon--he's like that :) And yes, we will be putting in bamboo all along the back fence so that will help. Or at least shorten the time that the sun is beating in...

Shade control for exterior patio

Our '55 MCM has a well-done patio roof (added in '59) that feels very much like an extension of the house. But it faces west and the sun pours through pretty good prior to sunset without any shade control. We have no idea what to do about the upper gable. Any ideas? I've been all over the Internet. ...

That was the VERY first thing I did! It took all my willpower not to rip them out before escrow closed! It's too bad the roof is only 5 years old, cause the next thing we really need to do is insulate. I'm sure you are all familiar with the way our open beam ceilings suck up the heat. And then we ca...

Anaheim House History

Hi--first timer here-- I was raised in an MCM in La Habra CA (just south of Whittier Blvd, just west of Beach for those familiar with the tract) and my husband and I have recently purchased our very own MCM just northwest of Disneyland. It's not one of the Cliff May tracts (mores the pity!) but we l...
