Just got back from Vegas. Yes, they are lowering fares for locals ... but raising them for tourists. Ridership has not met projections. Raising fares isn't going to help. Monorail pluses: Its beautiful, retro-futuristic look. Monorail minuses: Its absolute pain-in-the-ass way of making you go throug...

modfan, thanks.

The site is:

These homes look sensational! But the website has but tiny photos of them and too few. No floor plans. Damn!

Palm Springs, CA - Brand-New Midcentury Homes Being Built!

I did a search on this topic and couldn't find this mentioned before, but if it has (under a different title), apologies in advance. It seems there's a firm in Palm Springs called Modern Living Spaces LLC and they are building and selling brand-spanking-new midcentury-style homes. I like them a lot....

James Bond Drinking Website

Someone posted this in Tiki Central and I just know a lot of you will get a kick out of this. Everything you could possibly want to know about James Bond and his drinks. Here, for example, is a typical part: During his first morning in Jamaica, Bond asks Quarrel if he’s had breakfast. The Cayman I...

The Fabulous Ilikai Hotel (Honolulu)

I have only recently become aware of this fine super-tiki, super-midcentury hotel and can't believe there hasn't been a thread on this hotel specifically. I've searched carefully and found that this hasn't been discussed in LL. It was opened in 1964, designed by the same architect who built the Spac...

Don't forget he also invented a style he called "Romanza." I believe most of his L.A. residences were in this style. Mr. Wright surely is an inspiration. He didn't become a huge success until after he was fifty or sixty, and moreover his designs became ever more daring as he got older. I look at the...

Nice!

You might want to check out "Kitchen Stories," just released on DVD. It's a Swedish movie set in midcentury, very funny, lots of shots of vintage Volvos.

I thought I posted this earlier, but I guess it disappeared -- SDR, what do you plan to do with these concept drawings? I like the "house" one best -- are you planning to build it? I guess the man I envy most is the late Philip Johnson. Rich enough to build whatever he wanted on his estate. That's w...

JB -- thank you. But as a freelance writer I find that if I work at a computer that is hooked up to the 'net then I spend 90% of my time checking my fave web sites, etc etc etc. So I work from a computer in my office that is not hooked up, and -- increasingly of late -- with just a legal pad and a f...

Oh! No wonder I hear it so well ... Guess I thought it was LA because all the traffic updates are for LA. Sneaky so-and-so's. Anyway -- their music selection almost exactly mirrors my own preference. Now if I could just pick up a good jazz channel in San Diego (FM 88.3 is too weak to pick up where I...

The Nat "King" Cole Show

I don't know how long it's going to last, but for right now the BET Jazz channel is showing, on Tuesdays at 10am, 6pm, and 11pm, old kinescopes (pre-tape, that is) of the Nat "King" Cole Show. It's two of the half-hour shows put together for a hour's worth. Mr. Cole always has a musical guest -- las...

AM 690 -- "The Lounge"

Fairly new station in L.A. called "The Lounge" (AM 690). I live in San Diego and pick it up clear as a bell. Format is what they call "standards," but it's actually Great American Songbook stuff, with a heavy (and delightful!) emphasis on performers who were in their prime in the 50s. I have it on p...

Brand-new midcentury novel

Just finished "The Devil's Wind" by Richard Rayner. It's about an amoral 1950s architect and his unraveling of an extremely sordid murder. Takes place in L.A., Palm Springs, and Las Vegas. Scenes include drunken Las Vegans counting down an above-ground atomic bomb test blast 50 miles away (but brigh...

Patrick Macnee was indeed no fop. He was the third-highest decorated soldier in the British army in World War II. I only know this because I'm friends with a TV writer who worked with Macnee, and Macnee's war-hero status was something he never talked about. In fact, his wartime experiences made him ...

Yes, the monorail is running. I've ridden on it. All stops are casino stops. You have to enter/exit via a casino. There are all sorts of pedestrian-unfriendly railings/walls/etc. to force you to do this. Fare is $3.00. Ticket machines work wonderfully. Ride is fine. Monorail stations look great. Cab...
