I first saw those on a business trip to Rotterdam in 2001...my Dutch colleague was surprised I found them interesting. At the time there was a "demonstration" unit open, that could be toured. I remember they looked a bit dusty and dated but still fantastically experimental. Definitely late...

I loved that funky complex.... Clearmans was like a Bavarian castle in comparison.

Until today I haven't been able to comment on this because it's so heartbreaking and sickening. Commentor losfeliz gave an apt description of discovering Johnie's, the visual effect it has after the drive on a rather blighted and tired-looking stretch of Firestone Blvd. It was even more so at night,...

I drove from California to Oklahoma City earlier this year, to attend a wedding. Rather than fly, my friend and I decided this was a great opportunity for a road trip. Most of it via Route 66 (and I40), the mother road and motherlode of roadside Americana in nearly every city and state along the way...

State Capitol Bank, Oklahoma City, 1969

Does anyone know if this Jetson's-esque bank in Oklahoma is still standing? One of the slides was featured on Charles Phoenix' site.

The former Carpenter's residence on Newville is the same one featured on the cover of the "Then & Now" album. The neighborhood still has a mellow 60s/70s suburban feel to it.

Phase II is complete and sold. A friend bought one (the "Cosmopolitan") in August for the $359k. Phase III is selling but the developers are now asking $429, quite an increase in <2 months. Rumor is they've had some troubles financing Phase III as the homes are appraising $410 at the highest... They...

If you are in the East Bay, Alameda has plenty of retro buildings. There are some good "Japanese-influenced ranch homes" (very 60s "Sunset Magazine") along the cul-de-sacs that border the canal (off of Otis Dr.) On the south end of Shoreline Dr (facing the bay) are a couple "tropical-themed apartmen...

Maybe I've listened to "We've Only Just Begun" one too many times, but I've always thought Downey was underrated...I even made a site dedicated to it, which you can check out: http://www.downeydreamer.com ...to me it's the 'forgotten atomic suburb' of LA. There is a small group of dedicated "Downey ...

Mansionization issue sent back to planning commission

Thanks for posting the results of yesterday's meeting. On Monday I emailed each of the council members, asking them to support the planning commission. I actually rec'd a response today from Councilmember Perkins saying the "issue has been continued and will be going back to the planning commission....

Paul Clayton

According to the historical nomination, Paul Clayton was involved in over 280 projects in the SE area and built over 100 single family houses in Downey. Has the city ever done a survey of his works? The document mentions commercial buildings such as 'Firestone Center.' 'Cicero's,' 'Mechanics Bank' a...

Downey's NEW General Plan

Thanks for posting!

Program 7.6.3.2:
"Recognize Downey's historic significance as a premier locale for Post World War II and 1950s style architecture."

Great to see midcentury acknowledged in the general plan!
