We were four digits til the early 50s (except for 5, 8, 9 and 2 prefix), then got the WOodland exchange +4, which became the WO+5 around 1955, which lasted til about 61. It would always annoy my parents that I would pick up the phone, (rotary) dial the operator and ask for, say, WOodland 6-3457...es...

A reply to UdoMin -- http://www.mauricesbbq.com/history.htm ... ...that Maurice is one bad-ass cat. Check out this -- http://www.mauricesbbq.com/politics/index.html But that's a little off-topic. This thread is about the stuff that turned us on to Modernism. Like Mr. Nichols, there was a book . For ...

Ernest W. Hahn's 1967 brutalist n' swag-lamped La Cumbre Plaza shopping mall (on upper State in SB), where mommy took me to get Keds and my first suit and so on. That something like that could exist in mediterranean Santa Barbara floored me...of course, they've since mediterraneanized the place into...

About ten years ago I did a series of Abstract Expressionist pumpkins. Gottlieb, Rothko, Kline, Still and Reinhardt. Gottlieb and Rothko were easy, of course. Kline and Still had to have their facades held together with toothpicks--Still's was my favorite. Reinhardt was uncarved, natch. Nobody had a...

Nix, that is the funniest durn post that ever was! Likes bears, huh. I'm sure that's something innocuous about goin' to Yellowstone. I'd ask my buddies down at Cuffs, but it's been gentrified into a brewhouse. I've changed my mind about the KFC house. I want a house (and wife) what'll do something l...

I wish I could say it often enough: like grey is the new black, and Thursday is the new Friday, retarded is the new smart. And by "retarded" I do not mean developmentally disabled; I mean it with every low and ugly connotation the word can afford. It's bad enough that Mayor Villaretardo in...

My initial impression -- the doors should be taken off and the hinges should be cleaned and oiled and lubricated. But don't replace the hinges, as they're original. I'm guessing big ol' honkin' cast bronze Japanese style. Do the knobs actually turn? In which case you have a mechanism that runs throu...
