I doubt I am qualified to comment on what is or is not Modern vs modern vs contemporary, ad infinitum. I like 50sGuy's lamps though, as I like atomic stuff. However I do limit it as well. Still, I have a Danish Modern table lamp on one side of the sofa and a tall atomic one on the other side. Looks ...

We visited studios in both Georgetown (DC) and Bethesda, MD. Both had two people working there and one of which was a very stylish woman who looked at us as if we were peasants. But the other person was invariably an easy going guy who was helpful. Good cop, bad cop marketing? The white glove (love ...

Mrs Mod and I broke down and bought the Bantam sofa as well as one of their Chilliwich vinyl carpets for the dining room. Both are reasonably priced compared to other similiar items, but most of DWR is a bit out of control. Our pontificating took the form of three visits to their showroom before the...

...I keep wrestling with the notion that modernism as a design ethic and lifestyle may be a grand experiment that, in the end, has failed (at least for the masses). Well...let's see. We live in a country where the average family size has shrunk, but houses have grown in size. We drive cars that loo...

I recently procured a Nakashima-like chair made of mahogany. It has some dirt and scruff marks. Would mineral spirits be appropriate?

Much thanks. ***

Not so long ago they knocked down a fantastic Victorian in my old neighborhood and built a McMansion. The locals, most of whom value the 1920s vintage houses, decided to mobilize to prevent more of this. Their strategy is to become a historic district and thus block further monstrosoties. Good luck ...

Believe it or not, my neighbors had a Schefflera growing quite well for years in their backyard here in DC, a region of hot, humid summers and pretty cold winters. Must be a hardy variation as it grew quite large.

They just relandscaped and destroyed it. Unbelievable.

Yep. I think Wall Street was named as such becaue the Dutch built a wall for protection. Lots of streets are ceremoniously renamed in NY. The UN has lots for Schransky, the Mandelas, etc. The block where the Fillmore West was is called Bill Graham Way. I think the block where CBGBs is located is nam...

Hey no problem. New York is loaded with oddities. The streets are numbered in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn but are prefaced with "Bay" as in Bay 89th street. The same in Rockaway except that there it would be Beach 89th street. Queens is derived from madness as one can encounter 39th Avenue, 39th street...

If you know Manhattan, answer me this: what happened to 4th Avenue? Actually there is a 4th Avenue. It only goes for a few blocks. It is located in the Village just above Cooper Square and runs to 14th street. It used to be where most of the used book stores were located before the rents went up. I...

I hope it survives. I used to live a couple of blocks away at 58th and 9th Ave. I miss the MTA building that the tore down there as it resembled the building on the Stoly vodka bottle.

Stone's building fits better as its curves enable it to conform to Columbus Circle.

I think hats are cool. I have been tempted to procure a fedora for years, but I always balk due to a couple of problems. Like many people, I have always liked them. Are they appropriate MCM decor? Do any of you have them in your pads? Where can I find one like that in this old ad?

Is it strictly a matter of bad taste why people are putting up the Mc's instead of the mods, architect fees, or building costs ? Well...yes. And other things. I am no social-psychologist, but I can clearly see a disdain for the past in the USA. The good side is that we Americans are a very future-o...
