Hi again Loren - Monica Pennick is going to contact you, she is the one I mentioned researching the Laszlo book, she thinks she can help. She will also put you into contact with Peter Laszlo, Paul Laszlo's son. You may also want to contact Peter Loughrey, of the Los Angeles Modern Auctions. They sol...

I saw all of the furniture together at the LA Modern Auctions, it was mindblowingly beautiful! The auction catalog documents all of the pieces, and photos were taken of the furniture in place in the house before the interiors were dismantled. Paul Laszlo's son and the son of the Hudspeth family woul...

The photos of the von Sternberg house with the philodendren leaves are from the time Ayn Rand lived there. I'd love to find out the issue of Architectural Digest it was in, they're not dated, but you should see Roman Numerals and numbers for the volume and number... When Ayn Rand had the house, it w...

There is an artist's rendering of their "vision" here: http://www.foxfullerton.org/aboutthefox/vision.aspx click on the image to enlarge it. It looks like they want to restore the 1930's "Fox Fullerton" marquee, and also that missing pediment on that building on the right in Chri...

One more thing...

The people rehabbing the building may be eligible for additional tax credits if they adhere to these standards, so it might be in their own best interests to make sure that the City signs off on their "preservation" plan, and is on board with any changes.

If the property is "historically registered", it should be following the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation of historic buildings... You should see if anyone associated with the building has agreed to abide by these standards. Standard No. 4 says: "4. Most proper...

I need to do that to my fireplace, it has some ugly 80's polished marble on it. After you pried the marble off, I'm assuming there was mortar left behind? You say it came off easily with hammer and chisel, was there another step here too? It seems like some residue would be left behind, or did the l...

On a related topic (sort of), I'm wondering if anyone has any information about another photographer, Margaret Lowe, who did architectural photography in the 40's and 50's in Los Angeles? Did her archives end up somewhere?

I don't remember reading about a Saarinen/Frankl connection... I love that line for Johnson, the author does write a good amount about that. The Frankl line came out in 1949. Saarinen's line for Johnson was earlier, around 1940, the same time he was collaborating with Eames on furniture for the Orga...

KEM Weber information

I'm in contact with an author whose next subject will be on Kem Weber. He already knows about the limited archive at UC Santa Barbara, but I'm wondering if anyone on this message board has some other good leads to other resources, such as Kem Weber collectors, dealers, etc...? Any help would be appr...

Paul T. Frankl - new biography, Cliff May, etc EXCELLENT!

I just received "Paul T. Frankl and Modern American Design" by Christopher Long, from Yale University Press. So far, it's excellent! It is beautifully illustrated, with tons of photos I've never seen before, has information on Brown Saltman (Frankl did a line for them in the early 40's - B...

Both can do this for you. Automotive paint works beautifully on furniture, I had a rattan outdoor set lacquered with automotive paint, and it sits on my balcony, and so far the results are great! Regular lacquer (the real stuff) is MUCH more delicate. Automotive paint can be wet sanded and rubbed ou...

I agree, find a designer that is in synch with your own sensibilities... I always think it's best to live in a place for some time before you really start making any changes. You'll get a better sense of what's important and what isn't.
