SDR-- I'm meeting with Dennis Smith today at the house. He's the working partner in Buff, Smith & Hensman. (He was one of their students in the 50s and joined the firm in the 60s.) He said that B&H designed one house in Whiting Woods, but that the drawings were completed by someone else, bec...

Do you know if taupe, semi-transparent stain is the norm for T&G ceilings? It sounds similar to what's on our ceiling.

Hi jxbrown--

Good luck to you! Just curious-- will you go natural on both the slats and beams or do you plan to paint the beams? I've noticed a lot of natural ceilings (slats) with painted beams that extend to the outside. Still trying to figure that piece out.

Thanks, SDR... I really appreciate your input. I just came back from a meeting with our painter. I gave him a print out of your posts on pneumatic drills for ceilings from 2 years back. He's going to rent one. Just curious-- do you know anyone in the Los Angeles area that does the kind of work that ...

Hi-- I just read through the posts. tikiyaki-- sorry I wasn't of any help. Glad you found the Schaffer house! I agree, it's not much from the street. We have friends that planned to bid, but they had a medical emergency this week and had to bow out. The ask was $1.2 for just 1700 sq ft. Not sure wha...

hey, tikiyaki-- you are most certainly a neighbor! Our house is actually in Whiting Woods, a small mid-century enclave in the Verdugo hills, just west of Montrose. (Most people we know have not heard of WW, so it's easier to say Montrose.) Just around the corner from our new house, also in Whiting W...

SDR-- thanks for you input. I did a search and found almost my exact question posed two years ago by Paul in La Canada-- right down the street from us. You responded to Paul's thread more recently with great detail regarding the sanding process. I've printed your response to show to our painters to ...

thanks tikiyaki and SDR, for your responses. I appreciate your input. I did check out the 100 ways to ruin your MCM home before posting last night... it was fortuitous that I found this site in advance of making any decisions. I am now seriously considering just stripping the ceilings down inside th...

Sand blasting ceilings?

We just bought a mid-century post and beam, very spontaneously. We are not "modernists" by any stretch, but fell in love with the house and this particular architectural style in the last few months. We are doing some renovation of our house before moving in and I've read through several posts here ...
