thanks dentedvw, BOXOUTBM & Stephen... your responses were so helpful! We are not DIYers and have no plans to become DIYers. :) So, it's good to know that Ikea does have their own contractor. I saw a tv commercial last night for Ikea's kitchen cabinets. They do look good. Glad to hear you have b...

Favorite Cabinet makers?

Hey there-- anyone have a favorite kitchen cabinet company for wood veneer cabinets? My search did not lead me to any info on Scavolini or Woodmode, two companies that were recommended by non-board members. I see lots of good references here for Ikea-- not sure if Ikea is best for DIYers, which we'r...

I agree, it is a fascinating piece of work. I didn't know about the film until the itube video came out. I kept thinking while I was watching, "this woman's voice sounds just like Jackie O". I googled Grey Gardens to find out who little Edie was and discovered this bizarre world-- so sad a...

No, it's another one-- at 547 East Union Street. The one on Fairoaks is very cool-- lots of color. This one is concrete... easy to miss, if you don't slow down, as it's dwarfed by a larger neighboring building from the 1930s. Do you know the MCM office on Oak Knoll, just below Walnut? A professor of...

Madonna hung up on Grey Gardens

Has anyone ever seen this film? It's a fascinating documentary about Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's cousin and aunt. They lived a secluded life in a run down estate in the Hamptons... complete with pet racoons. Somehow, Edie Bouvier's fashion sense feels modern to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CG...

Pasadena, CA Whitney R. Smith Office Building

This is a beautiful office building designed by Whitney R. Smith that has just gone on the market. It was owned/occupied by an older colleague who recently died. The photos don't do it justice. (It's around the corner from my office and I drive by it every day.) http://www.marcusmillichap.com/Listin...

Futura Girl-- your segment aired yesterday in Los Angeles. Your home looks really interesting-- wish they'd showed more. Your choice of bamboo for the privacy screening was a good one. My husband and I put the same type of bamboo outside our office in Pasadena. It grows like a weed. In two years, th...

Chris-- I strongly recommend Yujean Kang's in Pasadena (or West Hollywood). In my experience, it is the best Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles (and beyond). When the restaurant first opened, more than 15 years ago, Gourmet Magazine named it as one of the 10 best new restaurants in the United States....

thanks, robbhouston and STLModern, for posting your pics. They look great. I was never inclined toward the bark, but hearing the stories of more insects did help to confirm steering clear of the substance. We ended up going with Mexican beach pebbles for the planter by our pool. They look good. My s...

Wow-- thanks (PlanetGlass, kjansma, 64cat, modfan, BOXOUTBM) for all the great input. I'm never disappointed on this board. rocks, dirt or bark?

This is probably obvious to most here, but I'm wondering what you all do with plant beds that have a lot of dirt between and around the plants? Do you tend to leave the dirt or fill in the ground space with small rocks or pebbles? Our gardener keeps wanting to put bark in the space, but I'm resistin...

question about Nelson Saucer?

Hello-- I tried hard not to use a Nelson light in our dining room. I looked at many other options, but eventually, I gave in. The saucer is the best shape for the space and it looks good. The only problem is, I really dislike the white cord that suspends the light from the beam above. Has anyone eve...

The Sea Ranch Chapel is another interesting, quasi-religious site-- very modern (built in the 1980s), but also part of a community with roots that go back to the mid-century. http://www.thesearanchchapel.org/ Sea Ranch is a development of very cool, mostly modern homes along the Mendocino coastline....
