We have bark - very pretty, but it needs constant maintenance and the kitties like to dig in it - pee-you. So we are converting to river rock and decomposed granite - looks gorgeous! No bugs or kitties and helps keep in the water & soil.

I had a similar problem opening our front doors - although the doors & all hardware were in excellent condition, the knbs were too close for me to get any leverage (and I only have 1 working hand, so that made it harder) We replaced all the doorknobs with plain brushed steel levers. They look go...

I too have had 4 vintage Bertoia side chairs dipped & powder coated - very nice, I must say! The original "rubbery" coating was rilsan - I don't know anyone who does that.

Ours is in the garage - the kitchen is just too small! Also there is the noise and messy factor. The garage door is actually closer to the MB than the kitchen, so is more convenient, too!

PS Put the hot water heater out there and you can have a nice pantry!

Re: The Bandstand mid-'70s attraction, Pasadena, CA

Name: the Bandstand After it closed in about '76, it became a gun store, and then I lost track of where it used to be. Today I went to the Pasadena Central Library and got the exact address: 790 S. Arroyo Prkwy. Now I just need to drive by and see what's there now. The ad I read today says the Band...

Jeff & Minx painted our place all white with tan beams. Being color folk, we have painted one small half wall cantaloup and the front doors turquoise. I will put seagrass on one of the bedroom walls eventually. Other than that, we plan to keep the walls white and use large colorful art (and star...

Yes, there are a lot of other, smaller mid mods in the Westmont tract, (it was the first modern tract of homes ever financed by the FHA) Are you sure about that? I thought Gregory Ain's Mar Vista tract was FHA-approved as well -- and that was just post-war. Just quoting from http://e-advancement.cs...

I think it is on the street directly to the east of Larchmont (parallel to it) and the house is right there behind the "village" - I think I have driven by it (looking for parking & nearly run off the street!)

Puking in the paint - jeeze. I am speechless at this story, although I keep giggling out loud, too. Your house has such good lines - I think if taupe is out of the question now you might consider a cool gray with a slightly darker gray accent. And a nice slab door could pop with a brighter color. I ...

Great suggestions about the pool, Stephen - but with all our little gardens and big patios, I guess there isn't much room left for one. And we're not worried about resale as this is our retirement home and we plan to stay. Let probate sort it out for resale! Our garage clerestories are acrylic, too ...

Good News in Pomona: New Cliff May Restoration

Home_Boy and I met some of our neighbors the other evening. They have been renovating/restoring a Cliff May down the block from us and we took them a copy of the Alan Hess Ranch House book as an offering, hoping to make nice & maybe tour their place. Donald & Gail were so nice. Gail lived in...

There are at least 4 others - one is an original owner and not online, (But he is very nice and talkative) two we don't know, but I have been waving & smiling and hope to make their acquaintance and one is Bruce Emerton who is seldom on the board, but very active in preservation. There is also a...
