The canted garage is really very nice - look at the aerial views and you'll see several like that - it makes the patio area between the house & garage really nice. I sort wish ours was like that...

The big beautiful new Chino Hills High School - archtecturally impressive - is not that far from us in Westmont. And while Home_Boy has a fab career at Cal Poly (5 minutes away), I am in the military-industrial complex that is in the Anaheim-Placentia area and it is a 20 minute commute over the hill...

Alan Hess (The Ranch House) came to visit!

Home Boy and I were delighted when the doorbell rang this past weekend and it was Alan Hess - author of The Ranch House, Palm Springs Weekend, Oscar Neimeyer: Houses and other swell books. He had been told to take a look at our Cliff May - and even though it was about a kabillion degrees inside &...

Oh, and the Rite Spot existed for quite a while in Pasadena, in what is now close to Old Town. I think there is a Louise's there now - next to the old Mecca Room. The Rite Spot was on the corner of Colorado & Fair Oaks and had this terrific mural lampooning city government by R. Kenton Nelson (1...

My Dad used to take me and my brother to Henry's in Pomona. I loved it - it was the best drive-in for miles. It was huge - and impressive. I remember when they dismantled it and it was like a piece of my life disappearing. My favorite A&W on Holt just closed - waaah! Now I don't know where to go...

And for all you Southern CA folks - Gainey Ceramics (yes, the Gainey planter folks) have their outlet out in San Dimas and they are open Thursday-Saturday 8am - 4pm. Large Gainey planters run $20-$60+ in some pretty modern colors. I have several - they are *heavy* - and the nice man who mans the out...

First, welcome! You have indeed bought a gem, although most folks on this forum are modernists and mid century modernists. Your 1937 home is a beauty, but is not a modern home. That said, you can still glean a lot of very useful info from these threads regarding restovation - the restoring and renno...

When I was a child in the 1950's our family lived in a Quonset hut - for a short time, we shared it with another family. Navy housing was short, and we took what was available. My brother and I loved it, though. It was a fun house to be a kid in. When we stayed in the Phillipines in 1958 for a few d...

I was going to get the bright blue color with dark cabin...

Wow - thank you both so much!

Yes, that's what I am looking for - back when I was gainfully employed, one of the things I did was design high-security facilities for top secret government research. I didn't want to go quite that far in finding who is at the door, though!

Wireless Door Intercoms - any advice? (picture)

As the new house is oriented away from the street - and the front gate is not visible from the interior - I would like to install a wireless intercom. Has anyone had any experience? I want something more sophisticated than a baby monitor, but less expensive than a national-security video outfit. Her...

Hi - it's a beautiful place in a really spectacular area - the views are really something! I think when there is a quick turnaround on a home like this (less than a couple of years), the folks on the board are naturally curious - like maybe if there is a disadvantage to the house or something. No on...

I agree about getting professional advice, but I like seeing what everyone else has done, too. OOOOH - redwood! Another idea might be cedar - and you'd get the extra advantage of the delicious scent and insect resistance.

Gotta agree on light, though - natural light - like a skylight - would be wonderful.
