Good News at Farmer's Market

How often do our favorite things get even better? I'm a huge fan of Mr. Gill's ice cream at the Farmer's Market--especially since Mr. Gill has been on the job since 1937. This past week the stand regained even more of its original look as a 1950's remodel was undone to reveal original thick glass pa...

shopped west elm

We bought some towels from the catalogue ... they looked better in the catalogue, but they are surprisingly attractive, importantly... absorbant, and great sizes. Pricing was very good.

Wilshire Tile is the Way

Try Wilshire Tile on Third Street at Cochran, just about 5 blocks west of La Brea. They've been tile setting since 1923, and have a large reserve of vintage tile.

why the bashing?

Ron Meyers in a marvelous Los Angeles based interior designer.... check the interior of Atlas, at the Wiltern.

And his article is very sensible... don't be a slave to a fashion aesthetic... and he's talking to those people who ARE following a fashion aesthetic, not hard-working preservationists.

Frank's Char Broiler

Frank's Char Broiler on the corner of Alta Vista and Beverly Blvd. is set to close at the end of the month. Get ready for a new ... Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. I grew up down the block from this 45 year old stand, and wrote a story about it for the Park La Brea News. The piece will come out in Thursd...

Look for this book

I have a great book called Mosaics, Principles and Practice by Joseph Young, who did loads of mosaics in Los Angeles. Published in 1963. There's a little reference to John Smith and other artists who created works in the area. It does show many great mosaics in process and in place. Truly breathtaki...

I brought a party bus of 40 or so to the back lot of Barbata's about a year ago, and panicked when the restaurant door was clearly gated and locked! Was it past shutting time???? With the group waiting, and a hot sweat breaking out on my brow, I tried the door of the Chandelier Room, which opened to...

I'm selling vintage fabrics this very weekend!

Please visit the December 1st special edition Santa Monica Antique Market at the SM Airport. I have a bunch of vintage upholstery fabric (small chunks and some bolts) that I'll be selling.
