the floor is in!

The installers just left! It looks great. We went with the straight lay pattern, not checkerboarded. We ended up putting in the luan late last night, after finally getting some answers from the flooring company on how they recommend doing it. We used a pneumatic staple gun with staples every 3 inche...

Thanks for all your input!

Thanks for moving my post to a new topic Joe! I didn't mean to steal anyones time/attention or whatever. I'm still kinda green when it comes to forum etiquette. As to the VCT, We've decided to not do the quarter turn thing. A flooring company is installing it for $750.00 including materials & ti...

the luan is the underlayment for the vct... we're putting it over the particleboard subflooring. I was just wondering if anyone had experience in putting down 1/4 luan, and whether or not it would split if you tried to screw it down or if we should glue or nail it down, or maybe it doesn't matter. Y...

speaking of tile direction...

I need some advice, we're having VCT installed in our kitchen this week, I have read that many of you use this, do you normally do like a checkerboard pattern (with the same tile, I'm not talking black & white 50's diner...) like when you turn the next tile 90 degrees. I need to decide by Monday...

off my rocker (or mods and rockers, sorry i couldn't resist)

If anyone out there can't decide whether to buy 1) a really ugly, but functional glider ($500), 2) a $500 to $2000 cool rocker that you can later incorporate into other rooms/sitting areas or 3) a cheap temporary wooden rocker, I would suggest not wasting your money on something you don't like and w...

Removal of old caulk on brick, exterior entry door trim

Has anyone dealt with old caulk on brickwork? In our house, the previous homeowner tried to caulk between the brick fireplace and the wall. It looks horrible. Outside, they did a crappy job of caulking between the light colored brick and the doors and windows. I've tried the stuff to remove caulk th...

Hi Egads, could you post a picture of how you did your door? Is the wall flush with the door frame, or does it go over the face of the frame (and if so, how do you work around the hinges? Thanks so much for everyones input. My hubby and I resorted on doing our own drywall after we had contractor aft...

BASEBOARDS, does anyone else hate them as much as I do?

Am I the only one out there who can't stand them? I think they take away from a clean look. I know that if you continue drywall from ceiling to floor, sometimes it cracks if there is settling of the house. I have never seen any interesting baseboards out there, especially ones made out of a non-trad...

more sliding/track stuff

I know this is a little off topic, but I just wanted to share another idea. We fell in love with these Ikea curtain panel systems. We have them in all three of our bedrooms and they can be either horizontally mounted or wall mounted. I absolutely HATE curtains anyway, and so many rooms in our house ...

more sliding track door stories and links...

Hi My husband and I built sliding doors for our bedroom closet in our previous house in Chicago, unfortunately we don't have any pictures of them, but we hung 3 X 3/4" birch plywood panels (from HD) on 2 tracks which extended across one 12' wall. The panels were pretty big - 4' by 7' with a sof...

Hi PNWgal, here's an idea if you're feeling guilty about using an old toilet that uses way too much water... If you have a large tank, play around with taking up some of the space in the tank with an object that doesn't float, for example, some people use a jar filled with water with a lid on it, ju...

hey there, you just brought up a memory for me.... My Grandparents lived at 6020 Fairfax, and it was this big awesome 50's rambler, with light wood, great brick fireplaces, huge front room windows, beautiful birch trees and ducks in the front yard.... Man I would have really liked to buy their house...

Thanks Robb!

I totally want to make one of these things now. We took out some 6 foot flour. out of our indirect lighting in our living room, and between that and some spare lumber and a sheet of plexiglass (which I might sandblast??) we have laying around, it might just work! The only question now is if I should...

more mod baby rooms

hi, it's my first time posting to this list, great baby rooms! Speaking of baby names, we named our daughter Modesty, Moddie for short. No one else likes it, but we do and that's what counts! Hopefully she'll like it too. It means a lot to us on so many different levels. I wanted to add my nursery p...
