Homes of the Times: The best houses in Southern California

The L.A. Times has nice gallery of homes -- mid-century and otherwise. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-hm-hometours,0,7453941.gallery Perhaps too many photos of tricked-out interiors and not enough of the houses themselves. Still worth a look though. Of particular interest is an Edward Fickett ...

Whatever became of LACMA's plan to acquire important modern houses in L.A the way they do painting and sculpture? I guess I can answer my own question: "It's the economy, stupid!" Anyway, it was one of Michael Govan's best ideas. Only an institution like LACMA or a showbiz billionaire coul...

The Huntington has added a wonderful narrated slide show explaining Maynard Parker's photographic technique. It also describes very nicely the whole appeal of the mid-century modern lifestyle. And if you continue just around the corner on Chelsea and Revere, you'll see a whole neighborhood of Cliff Mays.
I think they are the ones publicized in this ad:

Wow...remarkable. Although this house is screaming out to be lived in, at the same time it seems somehow appropriate that it is being reclaimed by the forest. How more organic can it get than that?! If it can't be saved, I think I'd rather see it go this way -- consumed by vines and trees -- rather ...

I’ve found that one of the best ways to start a cold search for mid century modern houses and neighborhoods is to look for elementary schools that were built in the 1950s. These schools were built by the thousands to accommodate the baby boom. It has been my experience that there are usually an abun...

Of course it's a wonderful house, but one of the first things I noticed is the difference between Photo 2 and Photo 3 in the gallery. Somebody did a lot of painstaking Photoshop work to get rid of those telephone lines. Good cloning work!

Unfortunately the Gainey Outlet in La Verne is closed indefinitely. I asked about it at the factory office and they said that the nice old man that used to staff the store retired and they haven't replaced him. The sign on the fence gives no indication of when they might reopen. I'll keep you posted...

1960s Space-age Hi-Fi Console. Just a dream?

I have this vague memory of a very cool 1960s era Hi-Fi console that looked like a strange hybrid between an Eames lounger and a model of the solar system. I’m beginning to wonder if I dreamed it. Anyway, here is a crude drawing approximating its design. http://www.csupomona.edu/~jelerma/lottaliving...

Although this might be a generic, off-the-shelf sign, used by many Mexican restaurants, I think I remember this one from the old Xochimilco restaurant which was located at Indian Hill Blvd. and Holt Ave., in Pomona. This sign was probably the best thing about the restaurant.

We didn’t consider the solar orientation of our house when we bought it. The fact that it was oriented away from the street and toward a garden was a big selling point however. Our Cliff May has most of the glass on the south and east. The morning light is delightful, but the summer afternoon ligh...
