Astro Motel in Fresno

The Astro Motel, a highway 99 landmark, has just been sold. The neon sign has not been lit for a few years, though. However, the article states that there is a possibility the new owner will fix the place up. I hope that is what will happen. Here is the article: http://www.fresnobee.com/263/story/15...

I'm still trying to find out more myself. So far I have determined that at one time Tagus Ranch was a 7000 acre working ranch, had it's own post office, was used as a POW camp during WWII to house German and Italian POW's. Like many other places in the Central Valley, a lot of Dust Bowl folks worked...

I was at the L.A. Zoo a couple weeks ago and they still have these there. They also used to be up at the Observatory, but probably are not now. The last time I was at Travel Town I bought one of a train. I wonder if that one is still there? Cool, glad the zoo is still operating some. How long ago d...

Do the brilliant minds who are now running that city know that those Sycamores are water hogs, have huge leaves that clog the crap out of storm drains, and have terribly invasive root systems that WILL tear up all sidewalks and roadwork nearby in a very short order. Other parts of California are get...

This one in Orlando is similar, but I'm not sure if it's the same architect as the Holiday Inns. It's a Sheraton now, and it used to be a HoJo's. I've stayed there a few times, and I asked for the top floor. Nice views! Also, I love the huge globe sign that Sheraton has put on the top of it. http://...

This is a tough one for me. Vero Beach is where I am originally from, and I grew up with the Dodgers there. I think that not only Vero Beach will lose a bit of it's soul in this deal, I think the Dodgers will also. The Dodgers-Vero Beach arrangement was not just a run of the mill spring training spo...

Tagus Ranch near Tulare

Along Highway 99 near Tulare is the "world famous" Tagus Ranch Country Theater. This place is looking quite run down, but the sign is a gem, in my opinion. Tulare and Visalia are looking to develop in that area, and the Tagus Ranch is a big part of the local history. Hopefully whichever ci...

When I was a teenager, my parents put wallpaper in my bathroom of old-timey newspaper ads from the late 1800s that had all kinds of interesting things to read while you were on the john. I must have read each of those ads a few thousand times. They finally remodeled that room a few years ago. Paint...

I know that Las Vegas is constantly re-inventing itself, and growing fast as ever, but they really should not keep demolishing all of the city's history. I know Vegas has a relatively short history, as well as a checkered one, but it's an amazing history nonetheless. I think whenever you remove all ...

Well, the Bun Boy is a landmark of sorts....but if it was going to change, nothing seems more fitting than a Bob's Big Boy. Hopefully Bob's will have signage that reflects the roadside draw that the former Bun boy is. I kinda like the font on the current Bun Boy sign. I wonder what will happen to it.

While the sign might not be up to it's previous splendor, I am just glad that it still has some nice neon, is still shaped like a ten pin, and was not replaced by a generic backlit box.
