How much did I love the illustration of Mr and Mrs Homeowner dressed in their ranch duds! Like this is what you wear in your new ranch home... LOL! As a graphic designer as well as loving modern architecture, I totally enjoyed this brochure :)

Strick House profiled in Los Angeles Magazine

Very interesting article about the architect and the preservation of this gorgeous MCM home. Check it out!

Yes, the building has googie-esque features on it. But that doesn't make it a worthy piece of architecture. Its really a rather clunky, big, square block with these features done in a rather ham-fisted way. I can't really describe it but if you go see it, you will see what I mean. The building has n...

This motel has some MCM characteristics (the roof and some trim) but I wouldnt consider it googie by any stretch. The place is an eyesore and the current owners do nothing to make it nice as they ran it into the ground. It is the worst property in the area. I dont believe there is much about it wort...

I wrote about this hideous house in Hancock Park that I saw last summer. I have since found out that it is owned by a minor rapper. I have to comment on this house that was on a street of rather dignified mansions. Gorgeous stately homes, mostly dating from the early part of the 1900s. It was arrest...

I would have to throw my vote in favor of the Fleetwood Center in Tarzana... http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i124/danperkins77/IMG_1095.jpg Well I think that is cooler (in a sort of hideous way) than another faux Tuscany village "lifestyle center". It is at least original and bold, you ...

"Some city officials, though, quietly hope both hangars will be demolished. They see the gray, 17-story wooden caverns as blights on Tustin Legacy, the park, housing, business and shopping complex planned for the old helicopter and blimp base." Well there you see the city's "committme...

"Trading Up" fools destroy a 1950s kitchen

I was watching "Trading Up" on HGTV and was appalled at this couple who bought a midcentury house (sort of a traditional style) but it had one cool thing--an intact 1950's kitchen. Pink! It had the metal cabinets with big round metal handles--and it was pristine. Not dented or beat up--and...

This "preservation" totally did not sit well with me. People were kicked out of their homes, so that the state could make money. Pure and simple. This was brought to you by a particularly loathsome State Park Department, the same one that totally f'ed up Old Town in San Diego and made it a...

The Demise of Johnie's

It's depressing to me how LA just eats its heritage. The Ambassador, now Johnie's. I didnt grow up here (Cleveland girl) but I think I have more appreciation for the architecture than some of those who did. Maybe because I am not taking it all for granted -- we had nothing like Googie in Cleveland. ...

Excellent Retro Motel and Restaurant!

If you live in LA and have not been to the Avalon hotel in Beverly Hills, you MUST do so! The food is superb and the maritinis awesome, but the REAL coolness is in the refurbished mid-century modern motel that has been tricked out into one swank pad! As soon as I drove up, I saw it would be cool, wi...

Sometimes I dont understand people. This must be a relative of the a-holes that bought the Maslon house and then tore it down. I mean, you get this perfect vintage treasure--and then rip it out. People like this should be required by law to live in tract mansion communities and never allowed out.

The Sky-Way Restaurant in Akron OH had car hops last time I was there (which would have been in the middle 90's). Its been around since the 50's. They have *great* food. Akron and Kent have more than their share of drive-ins--not sure what it is about the area, but there is A&W, Swenson's and Sk...

HGTV shows modern house but...

the person who bought it didn't preserve it. :( This is on the show House Hunters. A modern home that looked to be in the Hollywood Hills and in completely original condition...I was drooling. It had the original appliances (aqua) and blonde paneling with a modern fireplace... the bathroom had pink ...
