I have one and it works fine! I just wired it up to a normal modular telephone plug and plugged it into the wall. I love having a ringer that sounds like a phone should sound, and confounding guests who have never seen a rotary phone before. The only negative(?) is I can't get my voicemail from it o...

I have had seat belts and a modern power disc brake system retrofitted into my 1957 Chevrolet wagon. It ain't airbags and antilock brakes but I feel a whole lot better driving it!

"Industry Film Archive" youtube channel

An incredible collection of 1940s-1960s industrial and promotional films; showing how 1955 Chevy bodies are produced, heralding the introduction of transcontinental microwave telephone service, a great 1953 film called "How to buy a car".... Get ready to waste some serious time, jet setter...

Given how bad Public Storage's signs usually look, I'm giving them huge credit for creating a new sign that looks like it's been there for 75 years to promote their business here.

My grandparents' house in Memphis had the same treatment on the ceiling, I remember marveling at it as a kid. My grandmother said that one guy did the whole house in about a day - hundreds and hundreds of perfectly aligned plaster swirls. Their place was built in '59 and is still my benchmark for wh...

57 Chevy Road Trip

So I finally did something that I've been dreaming about doing since I was in the 8th grade. No, not Phoebe Cates. I bought a 1957 Chevy in the middle of nowhere and am driving it back home. So far I've made it from just north of Austin, TX to just south of Austin, TX where I'm working on the car at...

20th Century Props is closing - Sale!

I saw on Craigslist that 20th Century Props in North Hollywood is closing and is having a sale. Looks like they are trying to get rid of EVERYTHING this week. I went out there, and it is really overwhelming. There are thousands and thousands of lamps, chairs, sofas, antique radios, plate sets, ratta...

Detroit

Apparently city leaders have hatched a plan to "save" Detroit, by demolishing 1/3 of the residential structures there. Not just the ones that are vacant, but to raze entire neighborhoods to "densify" the population. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2010/04/29/am.acosta.detroit...

By now I'm sure you've found the various vintage stove restoratoin places online, and have determined that those guys range froma little bit weird to full-on wingnut. I had the chro...

Lamplighter in Van Nuys!

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the mundane awning in front of The Lamplighter on Van Nuys Blvd had been removed, and that the building was being painted. I figured they had removed it to facilitate the painting, but when I drove by again yesterday at dusk, the awning was still gone, the arch w...

South Pasadena, CA: MCM Apartment For Rent

Unlike most 50s apartment buildings that look really cool outside but really mundane inside, this one doesn't look like much from the street; a few small buildings set amid a bunch of trees. But the interiors rock! Cove lighting, a wall of glass, sculptured concrete block walls, a freestanding cone ...

Ben's Chili Bowl is an oasis in a sea of chain restaurants and all of the lameness and sameness that comes with a 'gentrified' neighborhood. The Chili Half Smoke is worth the 30 minute wait outside in the snow. Thanks, Ben, for the arteries....

I've always thought Rydell Cadillac / Oldsmobile on Reseda Blvd was pretty cool in a 60s modern sort of way. And isn't there a pair of glass and steel dealerships on Topanga that have some architectural provenance?

Comparing the two, Johnny's is a lot narrower than Rosie's, so it is possible that the flat roof section on the right is an addition. Still, the building next door to the left of Rosies is of about same vintage (and has a pretty nice folded arrow sign itself) and is different from the one in the pic...

1960 Carybe Murals from JFK Airport saved

A casual conversation between an airport skycap and a passenger heading home to Brazil ended up saving an art treasure from the trash. Maybe you remember the two giant, colorful murals in the east concourse of the old American Airlines terminal at JFK airport in New York. Created by Brazilian artist...

Mt. Washington, CA: 1958 Ranch with Modern touches

Saw this listing today on Redfin and thought I would share -- although any real estate ad that leads off with "Bring your contractor" is immediately questionable. Looks like faux-post and beam ceilings, and it also appears that the flooring has been stripped down to the subfloor in much of...
