When I sold my house in 06 I had the floor refinished by Golden Hardwood Floors, who were recommended by my RE agent. They did about 1100 square feet for $2k, and did a gorgeous job. Much better than my attempt at finishing the floors myself!

I was looking at getting one of the now-ubiquitous knockoff Eames Aluminum Group office chairs, and found them at a store on La Brea for $225 each. They were nicer quality than I expected, but the mechanism looked a little flimsy and they aren't aluminum. They're chrome plated steel. Over the weeken...

Wow...one of my earliest memories is being in the parking lot of the Riviera Theater in Coral Gables Florida, behind the Swensen's restaurant, when the (what I now know to be a) Chrysler air-raid siren fired up for a test. It was slowly turning on a platform. That had to be in 1975 or so. It was sti...

I know it's fictional, but you gotta love the Brady Bunch house. C'mon, build an orange and woodgrain Formica kitchen!

More seriously, there are some really cool looking Buff, Straub multistory houses.

1958 short documentary: How Kodak Film is Made

Here is a fascinating (at least to me) documentary about how Kodak made 120 size photographic film in 1958. It had been dubbed in Dutch but has English subtitles. Still has the obligatory 50s flim background music though. The film ends with the eerily prescient line, "Shoot it now while you sti...

Nichols is right on the money with the top of his list - the Dal Rae is spectacular, even if it is a bit of a drive. Be sure to order the Bananas Flambe, and hope you get the suave French guy to make them at your table. If you are down in Orange county, there is a new "mcm" restaurant that...

Real vintage always beats out new vintage for me :D The Beverly Laurel is pretty nifty, as is the Avalon in BH, but neither one has that seedy motel vibe I'm looking for. What I'm looking for is a location for a photo shoot I'm planning, one that emulates Klaw's work with the late Bettie Page, using...

50's motels with vintage interiors?

Does anyone know of any old motels in Southern California that haven't hade the mauve-and-fake-oak treatment done to their interiors? The Sahara, the Hollywood Downtowner, all the ones with the great signs in LA seem to have been renovated.

Seismic safety of houses on stilts?

Hello all - I spent most of yesterday driving around Mt. Washington and Eagle Rock, and have found a few interesting MCM houses, but they are all hanging off the side of the hill supported by stilts underneath. The stilts are basically wood framing, and the underneath kind of looks like the structur...

You could fit some Magneplanars on the beams - the MC1 would work. Unobtrusive, and with audiophile cachet to boot!

Or get a pair of the big Maggie floor standers - they look like MCM room dividers.

Thanks for the responses. It is seller owned, not probate or REO so that simplifies things a bit, and it seems the space has not only always been enclosed, but was built out the way it is now either from the get go or shortly thereafter. I have my RE agent looking into insurability of the title, and...

LA: Unpermitted rooms - run away from it?

I've found my little MCM dream house, but there is a problem. It's listed on the tax assessor's books as an 800sq ft 1br/1ba. It is in fact a 2br/2ba, probably closer to 1200 sq ft, with the additional bedroom and bath being built on the bottom floor (the house is on a hillside with the entrance at ...

I believe there's a picture of a period advertisment for that tract in the How Modern Is My Valley? tour guidebook. I'm can't find mine right now, perhaps someone could take a look. There are also some P&K houses near there, southwest of the corner of Roscoe and Tampa.

Run since 1957 by the same owners, the googie Frank's Coffee Shop on Olive in Burbank has been sold to new owners. Code Violations - Do they matter?

I'm looking at a property in LA that has had a copper repipe. It is slab construction, and open beam ceilings so the repipe people ran the pipes on the outside of the exterior walls, punching through the walls wherever they needed to, to get the pipes into the fixtures inside. It's a sloppy job, and...

I think my love for Mid Century Modern comes from the annual summer road trips my family would take in the 70s, going from southern Florida to visit family in Nebraska and Tennesee (with many many stops along the way). We would often stay in orange-roofed A frame Howard Johnson's motels. Coming from...

Spectacular house! I hope to be one of your neighbors one day.

Have you seen what's happening to one of the PK houses on Reseda Blvd? The one with the amazing scalloped vertical windows? The wall of scalloped windows was torn out and a large vinyl grid window put in their place. Arrgh!!!
