Eisenhower Family Doesn't Like Gehry's Design for Memorial

President Dwight D. Eisenhower's family wants a memorial in the nation's capital redesigned, saying the current plans overemphasize his humble Kansas roots and neglect his accomplishments in World War II and the White House. Architect Frank Gehry has proposed a memorial park framed by large metal ta...

Re: Hammer & Fowler Today

Hammer: Interesting, but much of it grim. Possibly because a lot of it is influenced by the African American experience in the 60s? No question, but many Chicanos were treated very badly during that period -- and many still are to this day; but most of their art, even when it's angry and/or protest...

Re: Rating the various PST exhibitions

Does anyone have comments about the Hammer PST exhibition? I referenced that in my earlier reply to your post -- see the 12/17 posting. Thanks. I missed it. We went to the JANM exhibit yesterday; small, but nice. BTW, if you've never taken the guided tour of the exhibition on the history of Japanes...

Re: Rating the various PST exhibitions

Went to the MOLAA exhibition today; very good, and very important to read the captions closely in order to understand the relation of each piece to the exhibition's theme. Since we were close, we also went to the Historical Society of Long Beach exhibition on the WPA rebuilding of the city after the...

Re: Rating the various PST exhibitions

There are so many that it's hard to decide which ones to go to. I'd be grateful to others for their reviews -- to help us decide which ones to go to. Not sure if you have seen these prior posts on PST exhibitions ... ... Thanks for the comments on individual exhibitions, which is what I was looking...

Rating the various PST exhibitions

There are so many that it's hard to decide which ones to go to. So...here are the three that we've been to thus far and our thoughts about them; I'd be grateful to others for their reviews -- to help us decide which ones to go to. Dave 1. Can someone tell me what we missed? ... or did the emperor really have no clothes? I'm a volunteer docent here on occasional Saturdays and here's what I tell folks before I take any payment. The curators have taken a selection of Eames quotes from this book http://eamesgallery.com/uploads/thumbnail...

PST Exhibition at the A+D Museum?

We were at LACMA for the PST exhibition -- wonderful!!! We then went across the street to the "Eames" exhibit at the A+D, but didn't find anything Eamsean about it except for a portrait, on one wall, of Charles and Ray? Can someone tell me what we missed? ... or did the emperor really have...

Rose Bowl Question

This question may not exactly be MCM, but: We're planning to go to the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl, from the Fairfax district. We want to drive to a red-line or gold-line station, park the car -- a friend's, not ours -- and take the Metro to Pasadena. Does anyone know of a below-the valley red lin...

Performer, author and humorist Phoenix will once again lead his annual expedition for tour-goers to discover the charm of MAIN ST...

DoCoMoMo redux

Years ago the Modern Committee was contacted about this and I believe it was felt that ModCom is doing the same work DoCoMoMo would do and that we are sort of a de facto chapter. http://modcom.org/ When I recently looked at the DoCoMoMo website and saw a NoCal chapter, but no SoCal chapter, it felt...

The Electric Railway Historical Association of Southern Cal?

My interest in ERHA is mainly early 20C, but its subject extended into mid-century, so: Does the ERHA still exist? They have a website and a contact email, but messages to the latter bounce. I'd like to find out about the (non)existence of the ERHA archive, and its location(s) if it still exists. Th...
