What do you need? I shot several pictures of the place four or five months ago.

I could make some wild-ass guesses about the lot being too small for a full-sized building, or maybe zoning restrictions, but I really don't know. And there is precious little information on the web that I can find on the other locations. There may be answers buried in local libraries; hard to tell.

In Praise of Googie Car Washes

Car washes may well be the unsung heroes of the Googie style. While coffee shops are dropping left and right, these stalwart fellows soldier on. And they're everywhere . http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj262/Gnomus_photos/Googie%20-%20Car%20Washes/BelCompCarWash6186.jpg BelComp Car Wash, 9765 Som...

First an article on Googie in the LA Times, now one on Giant Object Architecture -- I must be in heaven! The article mentions a "former big donut shop" operating as Daily Grind Espresso Bar in Long Beach. I Googled up a photo, and it does not appear to be one of the long-lost Big Donut Dri...

Well, I got a response from Whitney, with a link to Pann's webpage where they claim that Pulp Fiction filmed there. The common misperception is that the opening and closing scenes were shot at Pann's; those were shot at Hawthorne Grill. I'm trying to think of another scene in the movie set in a dine...

Thanks, Roadside! How about some interior shots? Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo. The back of the theater is filled with the workings of a Mighty Wurlitzer, the parts edged in fluorescent paint. During the pre-show, they turn on a black light and you can see them moving. http://i274.photobucket.co...

I didn't realize Henderson was such a happening place. The only time I've been there was to stop in at Ron Lee's World of Clowns, and that must have been on the outskirts of town.

Yes, nice article. But there are two mistakes in it. 1) Pulp Fiction was not shot at Pann's, but at the Hawthorne Grill which was later torn down. 2) They have the wrong address for Ships-turned-Starbucks. The Starbucks address they provide is for an office building. The former Ships is a few blocks...

That photo looks like it was taken before the front of the building got tagged up, and they put the fence across the entrance. The place is looking much more ragged now.

Roadside, thanks for the response. I'm shooting with a Nikon Coolpix 5000 which is about six years old, usually on a monopod, no flash. What I'm finding when I shoot at night is that if I expose for neon, I lose detail in the building, and if I expose for the building, the neon tends to burn out, wh...

I was down on Broadway yesterday, and saw what they did to the Olympic sign. Very sad. On the plus side, the Million Dollar is back open (and apparently booked for Last Remaining Seats this year). They don't have the name above the marquee yet, but I'm hopeful. A few more daytime shots. http://i274....
