You might want to check out the LA Conservancy's walking tours. The LA Museum of Neon Art is closed for now, but they still offer bus tours of notable signage. If you're interested in Googie, we could set you up with a list of addresses of coffee shops, car washes, apartment buildings to visit. For ...

I wasn't a "hip young teen" in the 60s, but I remember Mrs. Miller. None of my friends listened to her records (for obvious reasons). As for that YouTube clip, it's from a movie and the audience is being directed, so it's not a reliable indicator of how young people responded to her. My ge...

Lynxwiler, That's a good question (and a cool photo, by the way!). At this point in time, it seems to be accepted usage that the term dingbat describes the decorations, cursive names, and the buildings themselves. It's an easy way to describe them. If there are any purists out there who disagree, le...

This was on my "to do" list when I made a short trip to Vegas in December, but what with my friend doing the marathon and driving around taking photos of the old motels on Fremont Street, I just didn't get to it. Now I'm kicking myself... and making plans for the next trip!

I realize it's been quite a while, but once upon a time, Nathan suggested that a certain style of apartment buildings became known as "dingbat" apartments, and then their decorations, by extension, started being called dingbats. I believe the opposite is true. According to Hess in "Go...

I joined the forum a few days ago after lurking for a while, and then found this thread. It seems I am in the right place, if you appreciate Zippy. A number of the strips you've got here are based on my photographs. I started submitting to him a little over a year ago, and he's since done almost 70 ...
