chimney caps. they are indeed necessary to prevent fires and prevent visitors. they're not all ugly... look at your local home centers for other versions. they're pretty easy to install.

we were in LV over xmas and found the city to be entirely un-friendly when it came to thrift/vintage shopping... terrible, actually. historically/socio-economically, it makes sense, though. LV's a bit of a have/have-not town and the have's stay in the pre-furnished suites while the have-nots... are ...

aargh. so sorry to hear this. i'd definitely second/third the suggestion of following up and looking for some sort of restitution from the "charity" -- even painting back a solid white patch so you can paint over. as noted, a student of mine made up some stencils. you can find them at http...

there are folks who can follow a recipe and there are chefs. we went with a crew that has probably installed hundreds of these floors in grocery stores and laundromats across the county. seems that hiring someone who has experience would be worth it. our crew finished our house in little more than a...

As I understand it, surface prep is VERY important. Can I ask your square footage and whether or not that included the skim coating, prep? we had about 1600SF of flooring installed... the house is 1796SF and we didn't cover the bathrooms... prices vary, of course. ours was $4500 which included skim...

the price difference is the real estate market differences between the Bay Area and PDX. Bay Area homes run almost 3x more than Portlnd area homes. Is the Bay Area 3x better than Portland? NO! agreed. too bad our jobs won't carry us northward (and that i have a disdain for rain)... where's the arti...

also, i have to question what redneckmodern is talking about. to say that rummers are bigger and better than eichlers is ridiculous. they are not based on "concepts" by eichler architects. they are exact replicas of actual homes that were built. and no, the A frame model does not have a t...

i like johnny's idea... how about this modification? build a utility "tunnel" along the top of the wall and re-build the planter on top of it. you could face the planter/backsplash with most anything... i'd think 1/4in cement board with a nice, large tile that would seem "kitchen"...

Question: Fountain Grass / Man Down

This year is our first real landscaping adventure. We've grown things, but not to the degree we're currently tending... so, naturally questions abound. This one's about grasses. Our purple fountain grass -- creating a border along the fence -- took a hard beating in the rain last night. It's been fa...
