Big enough houses

When we had kids at home we had a "kid-raising barn" but now that we're empty nesters, we are very happy with a 2400 square foot "teardown" that we saved from the speculative builders. (Shown on my WebSite below). http://pages.google.com/edit/JGropp2/JGhimself-cropped.gif/JGhims...

Worth doing- updating and/or alterations

I've been doing a lot of updating and/or alterations to my earlier homes which is very gratifying to me. Flippers per se are a scourge! They're usually done (poorly) on foreclosures. Here in Seattle Donald Trump has been runnings full-page ads about how to get really rich from other peoples' misery. Here's one of these despicable ads: JG http://pages.google.com/edit/JGropp2/TrumpAdvs.jpg/TrumpAdvs-ful...

the Omnivore's Dilemna-

LotsaLs- I'm reading a very interesting book now called the Omnivore's Dilemna by Michael Pollan. I'm struck by the parallels of the US food industry and the US home industry and how inorganic they both have become. By no longer paying attention to what people really need in their meals or their ho...

Worth reading in Crosscut Seattle - 72 hours in the Issaquah Highlands

This helps to explain why Mid-Century Modern will not be displaced by
the New Urbanism.

Mid-Century Modern has not peaked-

Mid-Century Modern has not peaked in my experience. In fact it seems to be sought out more and more. One factor is that the original owners may have passed on and children raised in MCMs seek out a way to live the way people used to- with simplicity, modesty, related to nature. Yet another consider...

some MCM WebSites worth watching-

DoCoMoMo WeWa ( http://www.docomomo-wewa.org/ ) and 360 Modern ( http://www.360modern.com/home/ ) are well worth watching. As a Mid-Century Modern architect, I do keep an eye on these. Up here in the far NorthWest, these Modern homes are coming back into favor as simplicity (as well as modesty) are...

Updating MGM Mid-Century Modern homes-

Updating MGM (Mid-Century Modern) homes is something I've been doing a lot of lately.
Since I've designed so many of these in my long career, I'm well-suited to bring them
into today's housing world. My own Mercer Island home is a good example of this. Jerry
