The irony of realtors calling a modern house with walls of glass an Eichler simply for sales purposes, is that in cases like this it is more than likely a custom designed house by an architect, often with more consideration given to siting, views, and details created with specific clients in mind. I...

Maybe it is inappropriate for this forum, but as a fellow "student of modernism", I find it impossible to separate modernism as a global international movement from it's socio-political context. Any rigorous intellectual study of the movement (as something beyond style) has to include a po...

Actually, the Arts & Crafts era and Modernism have a few things in common. Modernism, though, did itself a favor by not engaging in social-political movements that were damaging, like the Art & Crafts did. Are you saying the Socialist League of William Morris in Britain was damaging? In wha...

still, peterm, you are missing my point. Why assume that I miss your point? Is it possible for you to imagine that I might disagree with your point? I can think of few things more democratic than the Usonian ideal, and few things less democratic than a one size fits all housing solution... In the s...

... Affordability was definitely a concern, but not the ONLY concern... peterm, you totally missed the context of what I said was a "failure." posting boards like these can do that when you jump into the middle of a conversation. If you go back and read the entire thread, you'll see my co...

Jerry- So Ray Brandes, who built his own Usonian (and a particularly fine one, at that), was your finish carpenter? Your designs were certainly in good hands! By the way, some of your detailing reminds me a little of Harwell Hamilton Harris. Was his work something you were aware of through the sixti...

Are you still stubbornly refusing to spell the word Usonian? I am not claiming to be an expert on anything, but you seem to be saying that because postwar tract houses were less expensive than Wright's custom designed houses, that makes the Usonian concept a failure. Affordability was definitely a c...

With all due respect, if you make these bold statements, please spell the word correctly. It's Usonian. In one post you say Usonion, the next you write unsonion... These homes were certainly more than inspirational; starting already in the mid 1930's, they contained almost every design idea that arc...

Indeed. What was Frank Lloyd Wright if not the ultimate craftsman? and that's why his Usonion houses ultimately failed. the were too expensive to bring to the masses. I wasn't until after WW2, when builders used mass production techniques that FLLW's dream of the Usonion became a reality. on what b...

right now, you are seeing just one coat as a sealer. the great thing about the oil, is you can just add another coat when it looks "thirsty", and continue until you get the desired sheen. it also doesn't darken as much as traditional varnish, and with redwood, that is important. i might pu...

first of all, the renovation is looking great!

secondly, i agree with the simple idea of white. i think it will make the island float, and i personally do not like either of the wood ideas. the floor is nice, keep it a flat plane.

the orange would be a second choice...
