you're right, the workspace (kitchen) cabinets are not original. fortunately, we have the drawings, so we will bring them back, probably keeping the appliances, which seem to be early sixties. those country hinges would maybe go well in a ranch-knotty pine house kitchen (think david lynch-cherry pie...

thank you... the 12 hassocks are made of clear heart solid redwood, and the rest of the furniture will be made with plywood with redwood veneer with solid wood edge fascias. this was a more common material around 1950, but now our cabinetmaker, stafford norris 111, is using his vacuum press and will...

joe- beautiful, thoughtful, and meticulous restoration. i like the fact that you went with the black vinyl tiles. our house in altadena had these tiles originally, but they were tiled over with quarry tile by the previous owner. there is a great a. quincy jones house in l.a. which has the original a...

thanks- maybe tweaking is not the proper word. we have tried to bring out the best qualities of the house, unify the the older part of the design with the later 70s addition, and correct mistakes that were made along the way. the majority of the work was in the guest house, which really was a blank ...

Altadena House Kenneth Gordon, Robert Gordon AIA, 1949

here are some pics of our house, which we bought in 1997, and have been restoring and tweaking ever since. the cantilevered addition was done by another architect, tim anderson, in the seventies. the pool house is a converted horse barn. the bathroom and shade structure were designed by fung and bla...

hello donsof1- yeah, osky as the locals say. did you know that there are two 1951 frank lloyd wright houses in town? for a place with the population of 11,000, that is astonishing. there are also a lot of flw influenced designs in the surrounding neighborhood, some architect designed and very intere...

i love that rendering. the design and also the drawing style reminds me of ralph rapson. his drawings for the case study house program in los angeles were whimsical, optimistic, and inviting. one shows a jeep in the driveway and a helicopter landing on the roof (appealing to g.i.s after the war). i ...

i haven't seen the meyers house (i will look it up right now), but the haynes house looks like it is in great shape, and mr. herber (sp) has done a great job with furniture and landscaping. again, the first job is finding the right person to live in the lamberson house while we are not there. do you...

our plans for the house could be divided into short term and long term: the first priority is to find someone who could be a caretaker to watch the property while we continue our lives here in l.a. we then want to restore as much as is required, (mostly built ins, shelves, etc.) but also larger task...

please do not rip out the cabinets. they are great! if there are spots that are problematic, consider open shelving in those spots. the cabinets are vertical grained veneer over plywood. there is nothing at all wrong with veneer! much better than new particle board... do what you feel is best with t...

redneckmodern-you are right about the paneling. beautiful grain pattern. if that spot gets a lot of liight, be careful about the fading which will occur when something hangs there, you might get a rectangle with a lighter color in a few years. but i still agree with blue agave that it would be a goo...

well, kansas city is not that far from oskaloosa! we are just in the process of closing the deal on the house and are offering it for rent. we are not in a position now to leave l.a., so we will rent it until we will be able to spend more time there. it needs minor restoration but is totally livable...

what a great room! this looks like great architecture. the understated neutral colors of your sofa and the natural danish era furniture totally work. any good art piece should work, but i think it would be best to avoid photography here and have a more colorful piece. if you can find a good abstract...
