Orinda Modern

The Wayne Littlejohn houses are from the late 40's early 50's, Mayhew's house was built in 1938. There is also the Forster house near the Country Club golf course by Henry Hill in 51-53. http://content.cdlib.org/ark:/28722/bk0000n4m41/FID16 http://content.cdlib.org/dynaxml/data/28722/41/bk0000n4m41/...

Looks a bit like Oscar Niemeyer's Casa de Canoas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. http://www.niemeyer.org.br/canoas/canoas.htm Also, in Orinda, there are a few homes by Wayne Littlejohn and a house by Paul Hamilton. The Ausenbaum/Parker Residence by Henry Hill. Orinda is unusually rich in handsome moderni...

Schindler houses

Schindler still does not get the respect he is due. The recent destruction of the Wolfe, and Packard houses didn't register with the kind of local or national media attention like the destruction of Neutra's Maslon house. IMHO the Wolfe house was one of Shindler's masterpieces. Here is a lamentation...

I'd be surprised if there is anything left of the original siding. The vertical board and batten on the top front facade, garage, beach side additions probably cover anything that remained. Looks like this was turned into an income property.

The original chimney appears to be still there, but the house has extensive additions to the rear of the original main living area and the original shortened L; the kitchen and utility rooms. There seem to be addtional build behind the main house. The garage in the foreground appears to be where the...

Kaun Beach House

Here's another view of the Kaun house with the garage and studio in the foreground. This picture really presents a better view of all the roofing paper wrapping the exterior walls. Attribution unknown. I still can't find the interior shot. http://shutter04.pictures.aol.com:80/data/pictures/15/008/7C...

The photos were in Judith Scheine's book "RM Schindler". I have also seen a photo of the interior some place; I'll look around.

Strange, I thought I had posted this under the previous heading for this house.

Karl designed this house while he was still a student at USC. He hired Roy Wheeler, one of Neutra's contractors to build the house. A very nice first effort. Last I heard, Karl was still practicing. I don't know of any other works of his. Perhaps I could ask him.

Smoke Removal

Since the smoke residue is generally on the surface, you can usually clean it off with a sponge and mild cleaning agents. The hard part is getting it out of the ducts and other inaccessible areas.

John Weber's JCC Mural's Impending Destruction

Sherman Oaks, LA County, California - Art historians and local activists in Sherman Oaks are decrying the likely destruction of an 85-foot-long mural. Although the mural is of recent vintage the JCC was built in 1959 and the Hope Group will be modifying it for it's new purpose. http://www.scpr.org/n...

Plantings in Ohio

I agree with rockland's statement about the evergreens. I would suggest a massing of low growing junipers, Juniperus, to hide gas meter, tar and tie the house closer to the surroundings. What is the facing of this side of the house? South?

The Case Study House #20, the Bass House, in Altadena, California by Buff, Straub & Hensman used ISP's made by Berkeley Plywood. Of particular interest are the curved barrel vaulted pieces, used on the roof, which were made of fiberglass insulation sandwiched between plywood. http://grainedit.co...
