That's right... PSModCom fought pretty hard to keep Frey's Ralph's from getting demolished. Glad I saw it before it was mowed down. the attempts at "frey-izing" this development are laughable. modernism is more than concrete block, corrugated metal and sloped roofs. they have stuffed way too many b...

Re: Casinos?

I think that there are limits (currently) as to how many slots that each tribe can have and only every other 'section' is Indian land in PS-some maps show it as a checkerboard. And since it is sovereign land it's pretty much exempt from mun. state control etc. but the smart tribes (some but not all...

i believe it's an empty lot, not a parking lot that abuts the wexler houses on the east. it is the only thing between them and north palm canyon drive. a structure built there (hopefully single story) would benefit the residents, i think. and i agree with joe about the siting; it all radiates toward...

New Wexlers in Palm Springs

has anyone checked out the 4 new steel-framed houses by donald wexler? got a flukey chance to look through one of them (the 2nd one back from the street) last weekend. spectacular. too bad these go for $750k but the one i saw completely captures the essence of the modernist aesthetic. all glass wall...

i went by the open house and wasn't too impressed, especially for $585,000. small lot with lap pool in front, back of house goes right up to neighbors. in a neighborhood of marginal homes with no architectual distinction. the house itself is basically 3 big rooms with a pre-fab kitchen in one corner...

Re: hidden alexander neighborhood

There's one little know Alexander neighborhood just south of Ramon, west of Farrel. Its often referred to as "Little Beverly Hills" due to the names of the streets: Roxford, Bedford, Beverly, etc. It borders the Mequite Country Club. The homes built here are similar to the ones built in Sunrise Par...

window treatments

we agonized over this issue too, for our alexander home in palm springs. we ended up leaving two of the sliders bare because they are under the patio cover in back, but the living room and master sliders needed to have something to keep sun out. i had our handy guy clean up all the window sills, edg...

Re: Frey House I

Quintessential modern architect Albert Frey had a house in Palm Springs, Frey House I, that didn't survive for long. There is a great book by Jennifer Golub called Frey I+II that documents the house. Great idea by the way! actually, frey house I does survive though barely recognizable. it was expan...

Re: Sad

The Biltmore was empty for quite some time and it was in really really bad condtion, I'm surprised it didn't fall down on it's own. Anyone know what's going up in its place. Like we need another Wal-Mart/Green's-too bad Palm-Springs-Modern-Homes (.net?) couldn't put some homes in there. the current...

Biltmore Hotel in Palm Springs demolished

yesterday a judge ruled against an effort to halt demolition of the biltmore hotel at 1000 east palm canyon in palm springs. within hours bulldozers were tearing down the main building - photos of which by julius shulman are well known.

Re: Herman Miller Showroom

Building was definately designed by Eames'. City Council denied designation largely because the owner opposed. Current facade has been altered from the original. Like the Eames House, which was designed and built at the same time, a variety of opaque and transparent panels of different colors and m...

formosa cafe

your concern is that the family didn't own the land? while i agree this is very unfortunate, at least the city of west hollywood wanted to preserve the formosa. something big was going on that property no matter what. i'm just glad the formosa ("never eat there, only drink there") will be around.

eames building facade

Is the facade still intact? i.e what original features still exist? Even better, does anyone have a current photo of the building? last time i drove by the facade looked intact. not sure about any interior features but, luckily, an italian design store leased the property and seems to have kept it ...

definitely stay at the standard downtown if you can - you will be blown away by the room! ask for an upgrade if you can get it... i'd say, stay at the standard on the sunset strip. go to the standard downtown for a rooftop drink, if it suits you. but the standard on the strip is much more fun, plus...

I recently purchased an Eichler and need to replace the slideing glass doors, 7 in total. Does anybody have suggestions where to go to buy these doors? Or, should I just go with new (old style) alluminum sliders? Any suggestions would be helpful. i say replace them with new versions of the classic ...

I trust you're aware of the houses from Chavez Ravine, pre-Dodger Blue, that were picked up and plopped down as the To Kill a Mockingbird set...I believe they stood until just recently.
