Thanks for all the tips folks. I think the original was an iron screen like the other pic in the thread - i base this on the screw holes in the planter. I don't think I will go for shelves but some sort of decorative and open item to keep the room open and light. We are trying to accentuate the MCM ...

LQQking for a room divider/screen

Hey all - I am looking for a room divider screen thingy that I need to go over our built in bookshelf / planter up to the ceiling. There used to be one there - I can see the screw holes - but it was removed at some point. Does anyone know of a place online or in the Dallas area that might help us ou...

True point. But from what I have gleaned most modern purists seem to put the end of the modern era of Modernism somewhere around 1965 which gives enough distance to make it a true historical era. But many argue that there is a larger more overreaching era of modernism that continues today. Personall...

Tru but there is a dictionary definition of the word 'Renaissance' as well and you can use the word to talk about a rising in general but when you say The Renaissance everyone knows the period being discussed. But when you talk about the Modern era or Modernism people are all over the place as to wh...

I agree - they are just TOO sterile or something. Many do look like waiting rooms but without the magazines or whatever... I think there is almost a fear of taking a stand or admitting that humans will actually live in these spaces. of course once people really get in there they may develop that hum...

Is it possible to be too cool?

I make my case: http://www.contemporist.com/ I do like a lot that I see here and I think people who like MCM design would be drawn to this stuff. But some of the interiors seem just a tad too sterile. I surprised myself when I thought that. But I think there is a warmth to a lot of MCM interiors - I...

I was thinking about why they would cover the windows with that wood treatment. One thing that I have noticed about Dallas is that people seem to keep all their windows covered all the time. Maybe that has something to do with it, I don't know. Interesting nonetheless. http://clarksdaleplace.blogspo...

Good luck with the changes - bathrooms are always full of challenges. I LOVE concrete unfortunately I have discovered that whenever I am in a store with concrete floors my back begins to ache really fast - and I am only 40 and not yet decrepit! Anyway, I guess I need to live with hardwood flooring. ...

This is a topic dear to my heart. I know during times of war people tend to gravitate toward conservative arts. Look at Picasso's paintings during and right after major wars - his neo-classical period. Anyway, when people feel they are in uncertain times they gravitate to the familiar and comfortabl...

Wood paneling - man it is a mixed bag in that room. The wood near the front of the house seems to be really high quality EXCEPT for the fact that they bore in those fake wood plank grooves totally ruining the large expanse of wood. The color is a tad darker orange than I like but the wood quality is...

By the way, I have a suggestion for those corner lights you have, How about making a triangle board out of hardwood faced plywood that covers the existing plaster fancyness. One could even use a strips of wood to cover the frieze. Just brainstorming. Ah great minds.... I was thinking something simi...

Wall color question

The wife and I are discussing wall colors for our interior walls - all of them living/dining/bed/den etc. Funnily enough when I think about MC interiors from memory all I can think of are woods, grass, stone - textures mostly. But our house has large blank walls. I know a lot of MC colors tend to be...

Good design is timeless. And it is timely - that is you can tell it is of a certain era. Bauhaus and MCM design are related tho not the same. There are some 30s deco buildings here in Dallas that are quite rockin and you can tell when they were built. A square in 1900 is the same as a square in 2001...
