"I want a Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock, and this thing which tells time." >>>

Brother Sky,

You know, of course, that you'll put your eye out with that.

Here's to Ralphie and his family! Hey, they had Fiestaware. So many reasons to love that family.

Will LAUSD also continue their plans to keep a few of the pillars from the lobby in their "garden" as decorative "ruins"? Although I haven't seen any renderings, it was in their initial, accepted proposal. Apparently it was what they considered to be a gift to the LA Conservancy -- their form of pre...

Lynn: Your neon "Office Entrance" sign is gone >> Alan, :( , I wish they had a crying emoticon so I could express my feelings properly. That was a great sign and I have a picture of it somewhere that I took a few years back. Great photo of the Fremont Drug, where is that? And I loved the warehouse b...

Monuments and Markers

My biggest oomplaint with the usual historical marker is that is usually placed on the ground ( ie The Mormon Fort, built 1868 as an example). Most people don't look down when they walk unless they are specifically looking for the marker. I much prefer the new markers like the ones on Hollywood Blvd...

The Meteor Crater

If you do the drive of 66 to the meteor crater, keep an eye out for the giant arrows in the ground. A few years ago, the little roadside cafe was still there but closed next to the arrows. Also, all the signs for the late, lamented Space Age City (featured along with the pie in "Starman". The signs ...

Tucson and surrounding areas

If you can handle the drive up to Mesa, there are some great old motels and a department store that is now an antique shop. Out front of the department store is still the terrazo entrance way. It was very cool. We were up there a few years ago and driving down the main drag, Uncle Mike and I were sa...

Imploding Las Vegas

Velas, The bad news about the original Strip resorts (the Stardust, the Trop, the Frontier, the Riv and the Sahara) is that it is the acreage they sit on that makes them so viable for destruction. There is an article in today's Las Vegas Sun about the North Strip and redevelopment. The Stardust alon...

The Westward Ho is closed for good

With a conga line of revelers (employees and long time fans), dancing out the door, the mighty Westward Ho closed its doors yesterday to make room for yes, more condos. The beautiful neon and bulb sign, designed by Brian Leming, was purchased along with the property, by developers. We can only hope t...

Khummer, Yes, it is a sad story. I probably should not have made light of it in the beginning of my post but Thursday evening at the Derby public meeting, the crowd kept pointing out to Adler and Co that their proposed project was much better suited for Beverly Hills. And then, Friday's Times points...

Just returned from there myself (first trip ever). Radio City offers a Backstage Tour that is well worth the price. Eric,

If I was a betting girl (and you know I am) I would say "Yes" .

Why? because Clear Channel wants to own the world.

Or at least make us think it does.

The Green Shack

My heart is slowly breaking. The Green Shack, in its day, was the place to be seen. Bugsy Siegel ate there because he liked Miss Jimmie Jones' fried chicken. It got it's start as a place to pick up fried chicken and take out to the dam to watch the construction. On weekend nights, the place was pack...
