Goats & native plants

I love goats as much as the next guy (ahem), but are there any longer term studies about the impact of goat grazing on native plants & animals? After all, fire is a natural part of the chapparal ecosystem here with some plants requiring fire for reproduction. Instead of goats, maybe the park sho...

Celotex

If I'm not mistaken, Celotex are asbestos, right? I believe that I came across their name in asbestos-related settlement information.

I know that Harwell H. Harris used them in at least one house in Silver Lake, L.A.

What's left...

Pieces of Clearman's are now on sale at Silver Lake Yards underneath the 4100 Bar at Sunset Junction.

Incidentally, they also have pieces from Santa's Village which was just/is being demolished.

Eric,

I drove by tonight & was dreading the LGs you spoke of, but didn't see any.

Could they have been a temporary promo?

Actually...

Historian Charlie Fisher recently determined that, in fact, this place isn't a Schindler. While I don't have the details handy, as part of his research for the Purviance nomination & Schindler's early solo career, Charlie came across early permit info (I believe) that shows it's not a Schindler....

Purviance Nomination Approved + pics

After turning it down late last year, L.A.'s Cultural Heritage Commission approved the nomination today. Many spoke on behalf of the nomination, including Mark Schindler, author Judith Scheine and councilmember Garcetti. Despite the many modifications (see pics) and nagging questions about the front...

Burbank building

I believe that this is the long single story brick building at the intersection of Buena Vista, Empire and the train tracks.

It looks like it was formerly industrial, maybe Lockheed-related?

More recently, I believe that this was the home of Warner Bros' failed studio store chain.

The prohibition against schools...

means basically nothing, because the board of LAUSD has exempted itself from local L.A. City zoning requirements. A school can be built anywhere, in any zone, regardless of restrictions like this specific plan. With LAUSD being one of of the biggest destroyers of historic L.A., I say, put a New York...

It is hard to compare the occasional problems of these residents to those of us in urban Los Angeles. That being said, I do understand the criticisms. If there were strict guidelines that weren't being followed, that's a problem. On the other side, when one buys a house that abuts a property on Wils...

Laura, I'm guessing that the house is in escrow. We did write a letter stating our intent to restore the house, which is what Gerri said got us into the final round, despite being more than $100K off some other offers. As for JCC's post, in my mind, when the dust settles, houses like these in Glenda...

Well, my brother and I put an offer in, but, of course, it went way over and we were countered at a million $. This was too rich for what we were looking to do, which was restore the house, add a pool and some great landscaping, and resell. I hope it went to someone that appreciates it. There were m...

Didn't you guys hear?

The City settled with Palmer to waive the 5 year moratorium. In exchange, Palmer agreed to pay a token amount towards local preservation issues. There was pressure from Chinatown property owners and residents who were concerned about the blighting effect of 5 years of nothing happening on this block.

Kim Sing Theatre

I've seen spaces for this building on Craigslist. It is just the facade that remains.

The theater that Quintin Tarantino was looking at is, I believe the one 1/2 block north (across Cesar Chavez) of the Plaza Church's parking lot, though I forget the name of the street.
