Hey, It looks like we both are in the same situation. I started stripping my kitchen cabinets and after heavy reconsideration I decided to replace them all. The insides were so crappy, I just decided to go new. I went to Lowes and ordered unfinished Birch cabnets....no routing on the doors, just fla...

Re: not pc

My mom is from shanghai - she's in her 80s and she never heard of feng shui - her thought is it's a belief of the southern chinese (who she thinks are a sort of country bumpkin type). Not to insult anyone, of course, but she's blunt that way. she's the least superstitious chinese person I know (& I...

and finally although i do put some stock into the feng shui thang.... it sounds like your girl might need to loosen up a teeny bit. >> TELLLL me about it. I'm slowly working on it. beamed ceilings would be the least of my concerns - i woud be more concerned about a balanced floor plan that is invit...

Has anyone else see the Penn and Teller show where the debunk things? They did a show on feng shui. They set up a room in a house, and hired three feng shui consultants to come in (seperately) and advise them, with hidden camera filming all. They got completely contradictory advice. I recall that t...

Re: Feng Shui and Modernism...

Finally, I've never been to Japan, but I will say that in photos I've seen, traditional homes there generally have exposed beam ceilings as well, to include the bedrooms. So I have to wonder about that rule... That could be because Feng Shui is really a Chinese practice. I'm not sure about how Japa...

I like to make up my own feng shui to suit my needs.>> LOL...yea, I kind of feel that way too, but try telling that to my girlfriend :-O A basic principal is that if something 'feels' wrong, theres something causing that, and a way to fix it. A great example is a door that can't open all the way bec...

Feng Shui and modernism

Wondering if anyone here believes in ideals of feng shui. The reason I ask is because, as much as alot of Modernism is based on Asian influences, alot of the Post and Beam designs violate some very important rules of Feng Shui...ie: open kitchens you can see when entering the house, and ceiling beam...

Have you tried Melinamade ?
www.melinamade.com
They have a variety of MCM fabric patterns, and I believe I remember seeing some Panton-esque stuff.

Need Terrazzo restored in LA area

The home I'm buying has Terrazzo in the entry, hallway, and around the fireplace...between 100 and 150 sq ft. It's currently covered with vinyl tile. Does anyone in here know of a company / person that does Terrazzo restoration ? I got one quote for $800, which I thought was a bit expensive, so I'm l...

I agree that it's a good thing that the MCM houses are posted here. The people in this forum really respect and love this style and I think houses this special should go to owners who love and respect them for their original architechtural intention. There's nothing worse than going in these kinds o...

I was told by a few flooring people that if you have a concrete slab then you have to go with the engineered hardwood, that is specifically made with the right underflooring. Doing the raw hardwood over concrete causes moisture problems. I'm in the same boat right now...trying to find the right floo...

affordable ?

Cool MCM homes are the last things to be "affordable" in the LA Metro area. It's the current flavor amongst yuppies...one trip to Silverlake will tell you that. In my search for a cool MCM home, I ended up looking in some areas, which, because I didn't grow up here, did not know were not so great. I...

FRONT DOORS

I was contemplating the same thing regarding a house I was going to buy. In LOWE'S they have plain/non-panel doors...ie: no ugly, curvy routed designs etc... They come in unfinished wood (Oak?) for $45. Most of the cool MCM homes I have seen in real life and pictures, have a flat non panel door, so ...
