I don't think there ever were any Cliff Mays in Houston. I have never come across any here. Unless someone has some brochures showing that they were built here I would say the answer is there are none. There are plenty of good concentrations of mods, Memorial Bend, Meyerland, Glenbrook Valley for ex...

I am not aware of any here. I can tell you where the good mods are in Houston, but I don't know of any that are specifically Cliff Mays.

Another potential mod disaster

I'm not sure yet if there is some way for me to divert this one. I have trying to keep tabs on one of the cooler mod houses in Glenbrook Valley (Houston) that is a one-owner. Hoping to list it and get a good mod enthusiast into this gem. It has a custom made sputnki light fixture in front. The inter...

There is no overall zoning. Subdivisions have what is called deed-restrictions which are enforced by Home Owners Associations or civic clubs. These regulate land use, like zoning, within the development. But, at the edge of the development those restrictions end and if it is "open land" th...

It's a huge task in Houston and especially with such a large neighborhood. There is a whole other controversy with changes they are talking about to the historic ordinances, here is an article on that: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/arts/gray/7099423.html Oh and as for zoning, the reason th...

Story on Texas' first Mid-Century Historic District

The local NPR station just did a piece on Glenbrook Valley, poised to become the state's first post war Historic District.

Houston, TX 1959 Show House - Westbury.

I will have better pics coming soon. This one is great. Has the original bathrooms, it wraps around the pool, which has been totally redone. Stained concrete floors, the right hardware, Nelson bubble lamp, walls of glass, skylight, etc. http://harlistings.marketlinx.com/SearchDetail/Scripts/PrtBuyFu...

Houston's first mod Historic District.

Glenbrook Valley has moved a step closer to becoming what I am pretty sure is Texas's first post WWII Historic District. The application has been submitted along with the petitions that represent over 51% of the 1,260 lots in the subdivision. Our Mayor Annise Parker is seeking to finally overhaul Ho...

Categories of mid-century architecture

My neighborhood is in the process of applying for Historic District designation. One of the parts of the process was photographing all 1,256 homes, which has been done. We also have to list the architectural styles for each. With 1,256 houses I don't want to split hairs too darn much, but what are s...

Houston, TX - 3800 SF Rancho style w/guest house

This is a good roman brick ranch that is a little over 3800 sq ft counting the detached guest house. The guest house would also make a great home office or nanny's quarters. Huge corner lot. Hardwoods in the bedrooms. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/roberts/Glenbrook%20Valley/Imperial.jpg For...

Winter doesn't help either. http://search.har.com/engine/7711-Lakewind...

Houston TX, Restored 3972 sf MCM on 36,715 sf lot

This one is being marketed privately for now, but will roll out on the MLS in March. It sits on a great bayou lot and has had $125,000 in restorations. The baths are original, lots of great features like poured terrazzo, cove lighting, etc. $359,000 http://www.houstonmod.org/bldg_detail.asp?id=43&am...

Houston is a bargain compared to more than just L.A., but it isn't trying to be the cheapest date in the country. I would hope the 4th largest city in the U.S. with the second highest number of fortune 500 companies wouldn't be at the rock bottom price wise. Given the amenities here vs. a lot smalle...

It's not 4%. The tax rate is in the lower right corner where they list all the info. The vast majority on their are 2.5%, some dip lower, 2.23 down to 2.06 and some change. the higher ones are 2.65. That is before any exemptions too. It's high, but it isn't that high.

Yep. There is a homestead exemption, and of course the over 65 and other exemptions people can get. Homestead saves about 20% roughly. But on this list before any exemptions the taxes are listed at $2,849 annually for the lowest on up to $83,041 for the $4,000,000 job.

Houston, TX - All MCM's all areas, $74,900 to $4,000,000

Here is a list of most of the MCM style homes available throughout Houston. Some are good, some need restoration, some need undoing. Inventory is light right now. Before the Californians fall out over the prices, be sure and check the property taxes. Texas has no state income taxes but they make up ...

In Houston the market is a bit different. Prime areas are still selling well while overbuilt cookie cutter stuff and areas hit hard with foreclosures, (often one in the same), have taken a price hit. Specifically with mid-century modern I have found the market to be stronger than the norm. Houston i...
