DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA Marmol-Radziner's Desert House

Postby WillowandSlim » Thu Jan 24, 2008 4:52 pm

Just wanted everyone to know that Marmol-Radziner's prototype for the prefab division has been listed for sale at $1,850,000. We will place it in the MLS sometime next week, but the story has already been picked up and many of you may already be aware of the upcoming sale. We are planning two days of open houses during the Modernism Show. Times will be 11-3 on Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17.

Warm Regards,

J.R. Davidson
Mossler & Doe

You can preview the sale in an article written by Peter Viles at the LA Times by checking out the following link:

You know, dawn is not my favorite time of the day. However, the Desert House looks really good then!

I've always admired the simple elegance of that house. If only I had a couple million to spare...

Is it just me or does the shadow in the first of TM's photos look strangely like one of the Nights Who Say "Ni!"??

I don't know if I could relax looking at all those windmills. It always makes me nauseous when I drive past them.

kjansma,

Haven't heard that reaction from anyone visiting the Desert House. The windmills are way far towards the horizon and are quite dwarfed by the view of the mountains.

That's hilarious about the smog. I hope no one was offended by my comment. In general, I do like the way the windmills look, and they are quite elegant in the distance. I wasn't seriously implying that this would make someone reconsider the house. Staring at them too long from the freeway, spinning at different rates, makes me feel a little crazy, though. But then again, I almost puked watching all the hand-held camera work in Blair Witch Project.

We had snow flurries this morning and a huge amount of snow on Mt. San Gorgonio. So this is a pretty rare view:

Note how green the desert can get when we get rain! Before December we got about 1/2" of rain in the last 18 months. Since December we've gotten over 5".

I stopped by the open house on Sunday. I love the house, love the finishes, love the acreage, love the view....have a tougher time with the location.

If I were to own the house, I would create two desert "oasis" at the property line on both sides just large enough to block the view of the neighboring properties. I wouldn't want them to be any larger than necessary so you still feel like it is the open desert.

That still leaves the fact that Desert Hot Springs isn't really the kind of downtown I would want to frequent, even if for basic groceries.

PS. If I were the Marmols, I would be offering to clean up the boarded up property towards Hacienda. Nothing is going to turn off buyers more than driving past an abandoned boarded up house complete with broke down van with busted windshield in the yard. Yikes.

Hi gwdiener,

Being one of the listing agents on this house, I have a certain point of view.

Your idea of zones on either side of the property to shield the view of the neighbors is slowly being accomplished by landscape. Trees have been planted which will eventually shield those views.

The boarded up house is for sale for only 1/4 million dollars.

Desert Hot Springs is a different place from most. People come out here for seclusion, and have since the 1930's with the B-Bar-H ranch. There is a Stater Brother's market, and a Von's. I prefer Stater Bro's as it's smaller and easier to navigate. Capri is a great Italian steak and seafood restaurant, Korean Palm is a fantastic Korean restaurant. There's also really nice Mexican, Chinese, etc.

But it's not Palm Springs.

The person or persons buying this house are buying the fantastic views and the fantastic house. Perhaps the second most famous house in the desert after the Richad Neutra Kaufmann house. It is a piece of sculpture that frames the landscape.

True, the approach to the house is somewhat edgy. But when you are inside the compound, it's great! I have been fortunate to have been a frequent visitor since the day it was delivered. If you want a view, this is it!

But I also understand your concerns.

I heard those windmills are fans that keep Palm Springs cool in the summer.
