I can only assume the windows are Dual-Pane/Thermopane.
As far as the roof goes, I'm going to have to do a drive-by and see what it is made of. I've seen gravel-rock roofing here in MN, it's not all that uncommon (the house I posted a few posts down in Sunfish Lake, MN has a gravel roof. There's a really cool Lloyd Wright house in Edina, MN that has one as well).
It's true, you don't see too many flat roofs around here. The snowpack can get pretty intense. However, roof meltoff usually occurs quickly. And, most flat roofs actually have a very slight pitch to them to facilitate sliding snow. The architect Charles Stinson ( ) designs a lot of houses with flat roofs in this area, and I've heard little controversy about them. For the most part, though, modernist houses around here generally have hipped, gable, or shed roofs.
I couldn't imagine building something like this further north, like around Duluth, where you get the lake effect snows off Lake Superior.
